• 0 <br />CONTAINMENT & STORAGE <br />Waste containment - Biohazardous medical waste and all infectious waste are collected <br />and disposed in such a manner as to prevent contamination to personnel handling the <br />waste. Biohazardous waste collection is kept separate from the collection of normal waste <br />at all times throughout the facility. and biohazardous waste is contained separately from <br />other waste at the point of generation. All biohazardous medical waste shall be placed in a <br />rec4double biohazardous bag (red bags will be tied shut). Sharps collection all <br />contaminated sharps shall be disposed in a rigid sharp container located in applicable <br />departments for collection. Sharps containers are then collected by the Central Supply <br />Department, sealed and placed into red biohazardous bags (red bags will be tied shut). <br />These bags containing sharps containers are then processed through our steam sterilization <br />unit and then disposed of with general waste. Special procedures regarding the handling <br />ocedures for pathological, trace chemo, are identified further in the medical waste <br />mnagement <br />plan policy and procedure manual. Biohazardous red bag storage on the <br />units will be accomplished by collection and placement into a large rigid transportation <br />container with tight fitting lid and locked, labeled with the words, "biohazardous waste" <br />and the international biohazardous symbol on the lid and sides so as to be visible from any <br />lateral direction. The biohazardous storage containers are rolled to the collection center <br />located behind the cafeteria and kept under lock and key (secured) so as to prevent and <br />deny access by unauthorized persons. Additionally, the storage area will have warning <br />signs on the exterior of the entry gates stating, "Caution - biohazardous waste storage <br />area. Unauthorized persons keep out." These signs �e in English and Spanish. <br />Housekeeping personnelwill transport the containers to the steam sterilizer unit located <br />on campus QLe-specific policy and procedure for collection an_d Stora As the <br />biohazardous waste containers are pickedu -three times throughouf the day and <br />transported to the sterilizing unit, concerns regarding storage temperature and days of <br />collection are not applicable. Located at the steam sterilizer unit is a steam cleaner unit <br />utilized for the steam cleaning, routine washing, and decontamination of reusable rigid <br />,,.medical waste containers. `located ince 1 edical and <br />Procedure Manual under the section Haz-Mat Emergency Notification, identifies the <br />techniques used and disinfectants to be utilized and cle <br />OFF SITE MEDICAL WASTE <br />Only HCS SJGH agency medical waste is processed at SJGH. We will not accept off site <br />medical waste transported to this facility for consolidation and/or treatment. <br />STEAM STERILIZATION <br />Located in the Medical Waste Management Policy and Procedure Manual are written <br />operating procedures for biological indicators and other indicators of adequate <br />sterilization including time, temperature, pressure, type of waste, type of container, <br />closure on the container, pattern of loading, and maximum load quantity. For specific <br />review of each of the items listed above, please see Housekeeping policy 7.11 A. Also <br />identified in 7.11 A are established procedures for checking, recording, of thermometers <br />during each complete cycle to assure the attainment of 121 degrees centigrade, 250 <br />
