Biological Resources Evaluation Report
Griffith Energy Project
Scientific Common Federal State Status
Name Name Status /Other Habitat Potential to Occur*
Status
High. This species has been previously documented in
the southwest corner of the Project site in June 2007
Coastal prairie, coastal scrub, (CDFW 2021 a). The most recent occurrences are also
Great Basin grassland, Great the two closest occurrences: two observations 1 mile
Athene Basin scrub, Mojavean Desert from the Project site in 2012 and 2014 (CDFW 2021 a).
cunicularia Burrowing owl BCC SSC scrub, Sonoran Desert scrub, Within a 5-mile radius of the Project site, the CNDDB
and valley and foothill has 44 previous occurrences of this species (CDFW
grassland. 2021 a).Although no BUOW sign was found on the
Project site at the time of survey, several burrow
networks which could support BUOW were found
onsite. Therefore, potential to occur is high.
Observed. This species was observed flying overhead
over the Project site during the survey. This species is
Open grasslands, sagebrush known to frequent areas of the San Joaquin valley
Ferruginous flats, desert scrub, low foothills where burrowing small mammals are present during the
Buteo regalis hawk BCC WL and fringes of pinyon and winter season. Due to the number of California ground
juniper habitats. squirrels present on the Project site, this species may
use this area to hunt prey. The ferruginous hawk does
not nest in the San Joaquin Valley and therefore, will
not nest in the vicinity of the Project site.
Low in Project site and medium in 0.5-mile buffer.
This species has been previously documented
approximately 4 miles from the Project site in 1994
(CDFW 2021 a). The most recent occurrence was of a
nesting pair 4.5 miles east of the Project site in 2016
(CDFW 2021 a). Tree stands in Patterson run are
suitable for Swainson's hawk nesting. Transmission
Great Basin grassland, towers surround the Project site in all directions and are
Buteo Swainson's riparian forest, riparian also suitable sites for nesting (Figure 8). In addition,
swainsoni hawk BCC Threatened woodland, valley and foothill trees suitable for nesting are found north of the Project
grassland. site, on the borders of residential areas. This species
could use the Project site as foraging habitat, but there
is a low potential for this species to nest in the Project
site due to the level of human activity near the only
trees on the Project site. Therefore, there is medium
potential for this species to occur in the 0.5-mile buffer
and low potential for this species to occur in the Project
area.
Tetra Tech, Inc. 5-21 July 2023
