Forward Landfill WMU FU-23 02300 18 EARTHWORK
3. Moisture conditioning shall be uniform throughout each lift
4. The Clay Earthfill material shall be compacted in-place to a minimum dry
density of 90 percent relative compaction at a water content of 3 to
6 percent greater than the optimum water content as measured by ASTM
D1557.
5. Scarify surface of each lift to a depth of 2 inches prior to placing the
subsequent lift of Clay Earthfill Material.
6. Clay Earthfill Material shall not be placed at a high water content so that
excessive cracking occurs when the material dries out.

C. Moisture Control

1. During compacting operations, maintain water content in each lift within
the range of 3 to 6 percent greater than the optimum water content.
2. If Clay Earthfill Material is too dry, add water to material by sprinkling,
then mixing or discing to make moisture content uniform throughout lift.
3. Do not attempt to compact Clay Earthfill Material that contains excessive
moisture. Aerate material by blading, discing, harrowing, or other methods,
to hasten drying process.

D. Field Quality Control

1. As the material is being placed and compacted, the QA/QC
CONSULTANT will be monitoring the construction activities and soil
properties as described in the CQA Manual. Acceptance testing frequencies
are defined in the CQA Manual. The EARTHWORK CONTRACTOR
shall cooperate with the QA/QC CONSULTANT in obtaining samples for
the CQA acceptance testing, and in leveling and backfilling areas
designated by the QA/QC CONSULTANT.
2. Holes left by sampling and testing shall be backfilled by the
EARTHWORK CONTRACTOR using the Clay Earthfill Material.
3. If acceptance testing by the QA/QC CONSULTANT indicates that the
material does not meet specified requirements for density, water content, or
lift thickness, the EARTHWORK CONTRACTOR shall terminate material
placement until corrective measures are taken at the EARTHWORK
CONTRACTOR's sole expense. Corrective measures could include, but are
not limited to, scarifying and recompacting of material or removal of
material that does not meet the requirements of these Specifications.

E. Protection:

1. The Clay Earthfill shall be protected from any contamination which
increases the hydraulic conductivity. Any contaminated material shall be
removed and replaced at no cost to the OWNER.
