Forward Landfill WMU FU-23 02300 19 EARTHWORK
3.10 COARSE GRAVEL MATERIAL

A. General Requirements: Coarse Gravel shall be placed around leachate collection
pipe and in sump area as shown on the Construction Drawings and should be fully
encapsulated by geotextile.

B. Coarse Gravel Placement:
1. The HDPE geomembrane lining underlying the Coarse Gravel shall be
inspected and approved prior to placement of the Coarse Gravel.
2. Equipment used to place and compact the coarse gravel shall be not travel
directly on the underlying geomembrane.
3. The EARTHWORK CONTRACTOR shall use low ground pressure
equipment to place the coarse gravel. A minimum thickness of 1 ft of
material is required between a low ground pressure dozer (such as a wide
pad Caterpillar D-3 bulldozer or equivalent) and an underlying geoembrane.
A minimum thickness of 3 ft of material is required between rubber-tired
vehicles and underlying geosynthetics. In areas of heavy vehicle traffic,
such as access ramps, the material thickness should be at least 3 ft. In any
case, the following table shall be complied with during construction:

Maximum
Equipment Ground Pressure
(psi)

Initial Lift Thickness
(ft)
< 5 0.5
5 1.0
10 1.5
20 2.0
>20 >3.0

3. Method of dumping and spreading materials shall be approved by the
QA/QC CONSULTANT and shall ensure uniform distribution of the
material and prevent damage to the underlying geotextile and geomembrane
lining. Approval does not absolve the EARTHWORK CONTRACTOR of
responsibility for damage to underlying components.
4. Compaction of Coarse Gravel shall be accomplished by shovel-slicing
during dumping and taking necessary precautions to prevent damage to
underlying geosynthetics.
