Water Quality Monitoring Report
First Quarter 2024
www.arcadis.com
Forward Landfill 1Q24 Water Quality Mon Report_05012024 13
2.8.1 General
The current cannery season began in summer 2022 (when cannery wastes were first applied) and continued
through spring 2023 (when the crops planted to remove nitrogen were harvested). A cannery waste land
application area (CWLAA) monitoring report for the 2022 to 2023 cannery season was prepared in early 2024
after the conclusion of the season; the report is provided in Appendix G of the Fourth Quarter Report (Arcadis
2024).
Cannery wastes were applied to the CWLAA during summer and fall 2022. Daily monitoring logs and the
calculated nitrogen mass loadings for the application period will be included in the CWLAA monitoring report.
Samples of cannery waste, soil, and wastewater were collected during the application period; the sample results
will also be included in the CWLAA monitoring report.
Winter wheat was subsequently planted in the CWLAA to remove the applied nitrogen from the cannery wastes.
The wheat crop continued to grow during first quarter 2023 and was cut on June 12, 2023. Soil samples were
collected on May 18, 2023 and land application resumed on July 24, 2023. No unusual conditions were observed
at the CWLAA during first quarter 2024 and no corrective actions were taken.
2.8.2 Cannery Waste Land Application Area Groundwater Monitoring
Program
The CWLAA monitoring network includes four wells (Table 2-5, below). Monitoring well AMW-10 was designated
as a CWLAA monitoring well in the MRP (RWQCB 2014) but was replaced by well AMW-31S in 2017. Under the
newly approved MRP (RWQCB 2024), alternative shallow groundwater monitoring wells were selected to better
detect levels of waste constituents. The four shallow groundwater monitoring wells are AMW-44, AMW-45, AMW-
46, and AMW-14. Wells AMW-44, AMW-45, and AMW-46 are considered downgradient wells and located on the
northern edge of the land application area. Well AMW-14 is a downgradient well located approximately 775 feet
northeast of the land application area. Results of the waste constituents for the alternative wells will be presented
in second quarter 2024.
Table 2-5 CWLAA Groundwater Monitoring Network
Well Type Well ID
Background AMW-1 and AMW-7
FSW-1 (Forward Unit) AMW-13 and AMW-31S
Alternative shallow groundwater monitoring
wells AMW-44, AMW-45, AMW-46, and AMW-14
These wells are sampled quarterly for total nitrogen, iron, manganese, and arsenic (in addition to the monitoring
parameters [i.e., ORP, turbidity, temperature, specific conductance, and pH] outlined in Section 2.1).
