Remediation System Well Abandonment Work Plan JACOBS
5. Sustainability
Sustainability principles aimed at minimizing environmental impacts that PG&E and its contractors may
have while implementing the proposed well abandonment activities presented in this Work Plan are
integrated into elements of the Work Plan. Applicable environmental stressors identified are as follows:
• Greenhouse gas (GHG)emissions
• Waste sent to landfills
The potential for environmental impacts from GHG emissions and waste generation from this project will
be minimized as described below. These well abandonment activities should also positively affect
occupational health and safety. By practicing sustainability in these areas, PG&E and its contractors will
meet the present well abandonment needs without compromising the environment.
5.1 Greenhouse Gas Emissions
GHG emissions contribute to climate change. Most of the GHG emissions anticipated from this project will
come from vehicle emissions. The following GHG reduction strategies will be considered when executing
this Work Plan:
• Combine field visits with office commutes to reduce automobile GHG emissions.
• For personnel not based in the project area, stay in local lodging as much as practical to avoid
additional GHG emissions created by long-distance commuting.
• When feasible, use alternative energy or hybrid vehicles.
• Avoid idling vehicles when not in use.
• Follow preventative maintenance schedules to optimize vehicle performance. It is assumed that an
estimated 10 percent savings in GHG emissions can be achieved resulting from proactive
preventative maintenance.
• When possible, purchase project materials from nearby suppliers. This will reduce emissions for
transport. By purchasing materials locally, well abandonment activities are also helping to sustain the
local economy.
5.2 Waste Minimization
The proposed monitoring well abandonment and remediation system removal activities are anticipated to
only generate a small amount of waste. Metal and concrete materials will be recycled as much as
possible. Attempt will also be made to reuse equipment if possible. Waste minimization will be an integral
part of the execution of this Work Plan.
5.3 Occupational Health and Safety
The highest priority of this project will be to have zero health and safety incidents. Raising occupational
health and safety awareness promotes sustainable human resources for the life of the project. As such,
this project will require a project-specific HASP, and the field team will conduct daily safety meetings.
B11204191849AKT
