2. MONITORING WELL INSTALLATIONS
1.2 Pre-Field Activities
Prior to the start of field activities, the following will be performed.
• Drilling permits will be obtained from San Joaquin County;
• The site-specific health and safety plan (HASP) will be updated. The HASP will
be available onsite during all field activities. Prior to the start of field activities, a
safety tailgate meeting will be conducted;
• The well locations will be marked on the ground with white spray paint or white
stakes.Underground service alert(USA)will be contacted a minimum of 48 hours
prior to commencement of drilling activities; and,
• A geophysical subsurface utility locating company will be subcontracted (if
necessary) in order to provide additional subsurface utility clearance for each
boring.
1.3 Monitoring Well Installations
Monitoring wells will be drilled and installed by a C-57 licensed drilling contractor. The
wells will be drilled with the hollow stem auger drilling method'. The borings will be
logged from the soil cuttings. The cuttings will be logged by field staff under the direction
of a California Professional Geologist using the Unified Soil Classification System. All
downhole equipment will be decontaminated prior to use.
Once the target total depth is reached the monitoring wells will be constructed through
the drilling casing. The monitoring well casings will consist of 2-inch nominal diameter,
Schedule 40 polyvinyl chloride (PVC) pipe, with 0.010-inch factory-cut, slotted well
screen, flush-threaded joints and a bottom cap. The outside boring diameter of the wells
will be at least four inches greater than the outside diameter of the well casings. The
annular space between the borehole wall and well screen will be filled with Lapis-
Lustre 2/12 filter pack sand to a depth of about 2 feet above the top of the well
screen. Approximately 2 to 3 feet of bentonite chips or pellets will be placed above the
sand pack
' DTSC and RWQCB will be notified if an alternative drilling method is used.
2
