2.4 Gloves
a)Abrasion Resistance-the ability of the glove material to withstand the scuffing action on the
surface to which-it-is-exposed.
b)ACTP—a rating system that can be found on gloves that uses a system of numbers, usually
numbers 1 through 4, that indicates the protection level. The higher the number the greater the level
of protection. A=Abrasion, C = Cut, T = Tear, P = Puncture.
c) Breakthrough Time-the elapsed time between initial contact of the chemical on the glove surface
and the analytical detection of the chemical on the inside of the glove.
d) Degradation Characteristics -when the material of the glove itself begins to break down.
e) Laceration Resistance-the ability of the glove material to resist cuts from sharp objects.
f) Penetration Resistance -the ability of the glove material to resist puncture due to sharp objects
g) Permeation - the process by which a chemical transfers through a protective clothing material on
a molecular level. It involves: (1) absorption of molecules of the chemical into the outside surface of
the material; (2)diffusion of the absorbed molecules in the material: (3) desorption of the molecules
from the inside surface of the material into the collecting medium.
h) Tactile Dexterity-the property of the glove material which enables its user to feel and allow
freedom of movement.
2.5 Miscellaneous
a) ATPV—Arc Thermal Performance Value is a rating system that can be found on flame resistant
clothing. The ATPV represents the incident thermal energy the fabric can withstand before the
wearer experiences a second-degree burn.
b) Flame Resistant Clothing — is designed to prevent or limit thermal burn injury to a person's skin in
the case of an Electrical Arc Flash event.
c) Fall Protection Equipment—consists of an anchor point, full body harness and self-retractable
lanyard that is used by authorized partners when working above 4 feet without the use of a ladder.
d) HRC —The Hazard Risk Category indicates the level of heat energy that an FRC garment will
protect the wearer. The calculation to determine the heat energy level is cal/cm2.
• HRC 1 protects against 4 cal /cm2
• HRC 2 protects against 8 cal/cm2
• HRC 3 protects against 25 cal/cm2
• HRC 4 protects against 40 cal/cm 2
e) Safety Toe Footwear—footwear that has a piece of steel or composite material inserted by the
manufacturer at the toe end of the boot to help protect toes from being crushed or dismembered.
Cintas PPE/JSA Program Reviewed 8/15/2025 4 of 11
