Interim Guidance for Coronaviruses - April 23, 2021 AOcom
Guidance on use of masks
WHO advice(updated December 1,2020) recommends making wearing a mask a normal part of being around other people,
and that masks should be used as part of a comprehensive strategy of measures to suppress transmission and save lives.
While wearing a mask can help limit the spread of some respiratory disease, using a mask alone is not guaranteed to stop
infections.A mask is NOT a substitute for social distancing and should be combined with other prevention measures such as
regular washing or sanitizing hands, practicing good respiratory hygiene(e.g.,cough into elbow, single use tissues),and
maintaining social distancing usually 2 meter(6 feet)distance or to local regulations, between yourself and other people. The
CDC and WHO advise wearing a fabric mask and not wearing surgical masks and respirators unless the user is a healthcare
worker, medical first responder,or in a particular risk group (e.g., underlying medical conditions, looking after an ill family
member, etc.).
Note:staff should always follow the directions of local government agencies (e.g., health authorities)around the use of
masks/face-coverings as a preventative measure for Coronavirus, as in some instances failure to do so could result in fines.
When using masks, it is critical that basic steps are taken to ensure effectiveness and prevent spread of infection. The WHO
When and How to Use Masks(updated December 1, 2020)and CDC How to Wear Masks(updated January 31, 2021) provide
helpful advice, including proper donning and removing of masks. The below provides general guidance:
• Various AECOM regions have established mask requirements specific to their locations. Please consult your Workplace
Readiness Plan/Pandemic Plan to obtain requirements applicable to your location.
• Before putting on a mask, clean hands with alcohol-based hand rub or soap and water.
• Cover mouth and nose with mask and make sure there are no gaps between your face and the mask.
• Avoid touching the mask while using it; if you do,clean your hands with alcohol-based hand rub or soap and water.
• Replace the mask with a new one as soon as it is damp and do not re-use single-use masks.
• To remove the mask: remove it from behind (do not touch the front of mask);discard immediately in a closed bin;
clean hands with alcohol-based hand rub or soap and water.
• Masks may not be necessary when you are outside by yourself away from others,or with other people who live in
your household. However, some localities may have mask mandates while out in public and these mandates should
always be followed.
• For further advice on information contained in this document please reach out to your local SH&E Director or Global
Security&Resilience Group Member.
Advice on the safe use of alcohol-based hand sanitizers
To protect yourself and others against Coronavirus,WHO advise to clean your hands frequently and thoroughly, use alcohol-
based hand sanitizer or wash your hands with soap and water. If you use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer, make sure you use
and store it carefully. However, please consider the below safety tips:
• Keep alcohol-based hand sanitizers out of children's reach.Teach them how to apply the sanitizer and monitor its use.
• Apply a coin-sized amount on your hands. There is no need to use a large amount of the product.
• Avoid touching your eyes, mouth and nose immediately after application,as it can cause irritation.
• Hand sanitizers recommended to protect against Coronavirus are alcohol-based and therefore can be flammable. Do
not use before handling fire or cooking and please consider safe storage requirements, such as not leaving in vehicles
in very hot weather or near open flames.
• Under no circumstance, drink or let children swallow an alcohol-based hand sanitizer. It can be poisonous.
• Remember that washing your hands with soap and water is also effective against Coronavirus.
© AECOMI Restricted
