Personal Protective Equipment <br /> ° • °° Rev. 1 08/23/2018 <br /> needed. <br /> Level C: Used when a lesser level of skin protection is adequate, but air purifying <br /> respirators are needed. <br /> Level B: Used when the highest level of respiratory protection is required, but a <br /> lesser level of skin protection than level A is needed. <br /> Level A: Used when the highest level of respiratory and skin protection is <br /> required; it consists of a totally encapsulating suit and supplied breathing <br /> air in the pressure demand mode. <br /> 4.2 Levels of Protection <br /> 4.2.1 Level D <br /> The minimum level of protective equipment is required for all work: <br /> • Hard hat (American National Standards Institute [ANSI] Standard Z89.1) when required by the <br /> Program; <br /> • Safety glasses with side shields (ANSI Standard Z87.1)when required by the Program; <br /> • Steel-toed boots or shoes (ANSI Standard Z41); and <br /> • Long pants and long-sleeved shirts or coveralls. <br /> 4.2.2 Modified Level D <br /> Within contaminated and decontamination zones, the following "modified Level D" equipment is required: <br /> • Hard hat(ANSI Standard Z89.1), when required by the Program; <br /> • Steel-toed chemical resistant boots or boot covers; <br /> • Tyvek coveralls; <br /> • Safety glasses with side shields, when required by the Program; <br /> • Chemical resistant inner gloves, when required by the Program; <br /> • Chemical resistant outer gloves, when required by the Program; and <br /> • A NIOSH/MSHA approved half-face cartridge air purifying respirator may be worn for nuisance <br /> (non-hazardous) dust protection with the prior approval of the HSPM or SHSO. (Reduction of the <br /> dust problem via engineering controls or other means is preferred.) <br /> 4.2.3 Level C <br /> Level C protection is: <br /> • Hard hat; <br /> • Safety glasses with side shields; <br /> • NIOSH-approved, full face, air purifying respirator with NIOSH-approved cartridges for dust, mist, <br /> fume, and organic vapors; <br /> • Steel-toed chemical resistant boots or boot covers; <br /> • Chemical resistant inner gloves; <br /> • Chemical resistant outer gloves; <br /> • Coated Tyvek hooded coveralls (when a splash hazard exists); <br /> • Uncoated Tyvek coveralls (when a splash hazard does not exist); and <br /> • Full taping of ankles, wrists, and hood. <br /> 4.2.4 Level B <br /> Use of Level B protection requires prior HSPM approval. Required Level B protection is: <br /> • Pressure-demand, full-face self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) or pressure-demand <br /> supplied-air respirator with escape SCBA; <br /> Page 2 of 6 <br />
