Port of Stockton Phase II ESA
Health and Safety Plan
10.0 Personal Protective Equipment
Selection of the appropriate PPE is a complex process and requires consideration of a variety of
factors. Key factors involved in this process are identification of the hazards or suspected hazards,
routes of potential exposure to employees (inhalation, skin absorption, ingestion, and eye or skin
contact), and the performance of the PPE materials (and clothing seams) in providing a barrier to
these hazards. The amount of protection provided by PPE is material-hazard specific. The effects of
PPE in relation to heat stress and task duration are a factor in selecting and using PPE.
The levels of PPE will need to be reassessed if any of the following occur:
• Presence of or potential for previously unidentified chemicals or conditions.
• Severe changes in ambient weather conditions.
• Assignment of new tasks or expansion in the scope of a previously evaluated task.
The following is a description of the minimum PPE that will be required during field work.
• Hard hats, American National Standards Institute (ANSI)Z89. 1 (1997 or later).
• Long pants, long sleeve shirts.
• ANSI Z-87. 1 approved eye protection.
• ANSI Type II reflective vests.
• ASTM F 2413 approved over-the-ankle, safety-toed boots.
• Work gloves should be worn at all times except when working in the vicinity of
rotating equipment.
• Work within a 10-foot range of open water shall require personnel to don personnel
flotation devices. Additionally, a life ring shall be maintained within reasonable reach
of those personnel.
• Dust masks shall be carried by all personnel to be worn as needed.
• Hearing protection is required for working in the vicinity of equipment that is
operating at greater than 80 dB.
PPE required for protection against blood born pathogens during CPR/ First Aid includes:
• Responder gloves (e.g., latex, nitrile, Viton, etc.). No latex if a team member has an
allergy to latex.
• Safety glasses with side shields (minimum eye protection)
• Liquid splash goggles (preferred eye protection if available, not mandatory)
• Full-face shield (if potential for splash onto face, especially the mouth)
Any changes to the PPE must first be reviewed by the PM.
9
