Filters:
Oil filters are drained of all free flowing oil (typically for 24 hours). Diesel fuel filters
are also drained of free flowing fuel (typically for 24 hours). Drained filters are crushed
by the filter crusher machine. Crushed filters are placed in either 55 -gallon drums or a
small dumpster, which are labeled "DRAINED USED OIL/ DIESEL FILTERS". The
initial date of accumulation will be marked on each drum, followed by the generator's
name and address. The drums/dumpster are typically stored in the a covered/bermed area
along the 2710 Shop's east -outer wall. Up to one ton of used filters may be accumulated
on site for no more than one year prior to recycling. Storage of one ton or more of used
filters is limited to 180 days. One ton of crushed filters fills approximately six drums.
Used filters are collected for recycling by a qualified recycling contractor (as noted in
Section 5).
Antifreeze/ Coolant:
Waste radiator fluid (ethylene glycol) is placed in 55 -gallon drums or a tote. The drums,
or tote, will be labeled "WASTE ANTIFREEZE/ COOLANT", "HAZARDOUS
WASTE". The initial date of accumulation will be marked on each drum, followed by
the generator's name and address. Also include "Toxic Liquid". The drums are stored
in the 2710 Shop or in the bermed/covered area along the shop's east -outer wall. Waste
radiator fluid is stored on site for less than 90 days prior to removal off site by a qualified
recycling contractor (as noted in Section 5).
Batteries:
eo*ls
Stored, spent or used lead -acid batteries are protected so that short circuits are prevented
and battery acid does not leak. Spent batteries are stored in one designated location for
no longer than one year if less than one ton total, or 180 days if more than one ton. The
batteries are stored on metal shelves that have an upward edge to contain liquids, should
there be a leak. The metal shelves are located in 2710 Shop's Battery Room. Spent
batteries are collected and transported from the facility by a qualified recycling contractor
(as noted in Section 5). Intact spent batteries, and properly contained damaged batteries,
are marked with either the date the battery was taken out of service or the date it was
received for transport/storage. The date shall be written in a weather -resistant material,
such as ink or paint, and be legible and conspicuous.
