2. Field Coats <br /> Field coats shall consist of one or more finish coats to build up the coating to the <br /> specified dry film thickness. Unless otherwise specified, finish coats shall not be <br /> applied until the prime and intermediate coats have been inspected. <br /> 3.02 PREPARATION <br /> A. General <br /> All surfaces to be coated or painted shall be in the proper condition to receive the <br /> material specified before any coating or painting is performed. No more sandblasting or <br /> surface preparation than can be coated or painted in a normal working day will be <br /> permitted. All sharp edges, burrs and weld spatter shall be removed. The following levels <br /> of surface preparation are subsequently referred to: <br /> 1. White Metal Blast Cleaning (SSPC-SP-5): Removal of all visible rust, mill <br /> scale!, paint, and foreign matter by blast cleaning by wheel or nozzle (dry) <br /> using sand, grit, or shot. <br /> 2. Near.-White Blast Cleaning (SSPC-SP-10): Blast cleaning nearly to white <br /> metal cleanliness until at least 95 percent of each element of surface area <br /> is free of all visible residues. <br /> 3. Commercial Blast (SSPC-SP-6): Blast cleaning until at least 67 percent of <br /> each element of surface area is free of all visible residues. <br /> 4. Brush-Off Blast Cleaning (SSPC-SP-7): Blast cleaning of film, rust, loose <br /> coatings, and providing a roughened surface for application of a new finish <br /> coat. <br /> 5. Solvent Cleaning (SSPC-SP-1): Removal of all grease, oil and dirt. <br /> B. Metallic Surfaces <br /> Metallic surfaces shall be prepared in accordance with applicable portions of surface <br /> preparation specifications of the Steel Structures Painting Council (SSPC) specified in <br /> each coating system. The solvent in solvent cleaning operations shall be as <br /> recommended by the manufacturer. <br /> 3.03 APPLICATION <br /> A. Workmanship <br /> Each coat of paint shall be of the consistency as supplied by the manufacturer, or <br /> thinned if necessary, and applied in accordance with the manufacturer's written <br /> instructions. Each coat shall be well brushed, rolled, or sprayed to obtain a uniform and <br /> evenly applied finish. Work shall be free from "runs", "bridges", "shiners", or other <br /> imperfections due to faulty intervals. Particular care shall be taken to obtain a uniform, <br /> unbroken coating over all bolts, threads, nuts, welds, edges and corners.
