The Contractor shall take all necessary precautions to prevent any joint from drawing
while the lines and their appurtenances are being tested; and he shall, at his own
expense, repair any damage to the lines and their appurtenances, or to any other
structures, resulting from or caused by these tests.
Newly constructed pipe shall be isolated from existing pipe and shall satisfactorily pass
the test specified herein prior to connection of that pipe to any existing piping or valves.
Clean water shall be the test medium for all hydrostatic tests. The Contractor may obtain
test water from the City's water distribution system from a point or points approved by
the City. Care shall be exercised to isolate equipment which is not rated for the specified
test pressure to avoid damage to the equipment.
The Contractor shall furnish the City with a written record of all tests.
D. Pipe System Testing
All water piping shall be hydrostatically tested at 150 psi and all sewer pipe shall be air
tested in accordance with City Standard Construction Specifications.
E. Hydrostatic Leak Test
Exposed Pressure Piping: Vents at all high points of the piping system shall be opened
to purge air pockets while the piping system is filling. Venting during the filling of the
system also may be provided by loosening of flanges having a minimum of four bolts or
by the use of equipment vents. All parts of the piping system shall be subjected to the
test pressure and for the minimum duration of time specified. Each pipe system shall be
filled with water using a pump connected to the pipe with a corporation stop. After the
system is at the specified test pressure, the pump shall be removed and the corporation
stop closed. Examination for leakage shall be made at all joints and connections. The
piping system, exclusive of possible localized instances at pump or valve packing, shall
show no visual evidence of weeping or leaking. Any visible leakage shall be corrected at
no additional cost to the City.
During the test all exposed pipe, fittings, valves, hydrants, and joints will be carefully
examined. Any cracked or defective material shall be removed and replaced by the
Contractor to the satisfaction of the Engineer and no additional payment will be made
therefore. The test shall be repeated until no defects remain.
Buried Pressure and Gravity Piping: When testing cement-mortar lined pipe, concrete
pipe or other pipe made from material that will absorb water, the line to be tested shall
be filled at least 24 hours prior to testing and maintained under a slight pressure. All air
shall be expelled from the pipeline prior to testing. Method of applying test pressure shall
be as specified above for exposed piping. No pipe installation will be accepted if the
pressure in the pi0eline drops, indicating leakage. The Contractor shall correct any
leakage in the pipelines and shall retest the pipeline until the leakage is eliminated. All
such work shall be done entirely at the Contractor's expense.
July 2007 Division III-160 NEI Phase II Water and Sewer
CIP Nos. 7468, 7589, 7590
