nATIONAI. ADVERTISING COMPANY- ADDITIONAL SUBSURFACE INVESTIGATION. HEALTH AND SAFETY PLAY <br />All field crew members should make use of their senses (all senses) to alert them to potent iallydangerous <br />{ situations, e.g., presence of strong, irritating, or nauseating odors. <br />4.3.3 Site Awareness <br />Field crew members shall be familiar with the physical characteristics .and requirements of the work. site, <br />including: <br />• Accessibility to equipment and vehicles <br />• Communication <br />• Hot zones (areas of known or suspected contamination) <br />• Site access <br />• Emergency procedures and evacuation assembly points <br />• Location of protective and emergency equipment and relevant first-aid procedures. <br />The number of personnel and equipment in controlled work areas should be.minimized, consistent with <br />site operations. <br />4.3.4 Buddy System <br />All onsite personnel shall operate using the two-man concept (buddy system). All personnel shall operate <br />in teams of two or more (single man entry into any controlled work area is prohibited), whose members <br />shall maintain visual contact with each other at all times. Personnel belonging to different organizations <br />can serve as "buddies" for each other. <br />4.3.5 Communications <br />Effective communication is essential to safe working conditions and the successful completion of field <br />projects. During on site activities a means of off-site communication will be maintained by Earth Tech <br />using cellular telephone links to maximize communications with emergency response units (e.g., police, <br />ambulance teams, fire department, etc.). . Due to the small areas encompassed by this project voice <br />communications will be adequate for on-site communications. In the event of a catastrophic event any <br />notice to evacuate will be given verbally by the Site Supervisor/SSO. Amore complex evacuation system <br />(e.g., use of horns) is not required since work areas will be quite small. <br />4.4 HOUSEKEEPING <br />During site activities work areas will be continuously policed for identification of excess trash and <br />unnecessary debris. Excess debris and trash will be .collected and stored in an appropriate container (e.g., <br />plastic trash bags, garbage can, roll -off bin) prior to ,,disposal. At no time will debris or trash be <br />intermingled with waste PPE or contaminated materials. Anyone observed. throwing contaminated <br />material or PPE away with municipal wastes will be removed from the site. <br />4.5 PERSONAL HYGIENE <br />At a minimum, adequate supplies of personal hygiene supplies will be available for use by site personnel. <br />Personal hygiene items will include the following: <br />hslprojsuplcominachasp.doc -4-3 02/09/98 <br />
