Site Health & Safety Plan
574 West Grantline Road
,CA
5.2 Chemical Hazards (cont.)
UST Removal and Replacement
The following chemicals have been identified as those of the greatest
concern during the operations of the UST removal.
5.2.1 Volatile Aromatic Hydrocarbons
Typically, the concentrated vapor of pure aromatic hydrocarbons can cause
central nervous system damage, depending the compound, hepatic, renal,
or bone marrow disorders. The vapor is absorbed through the lungs and the
liquid may be absorbed through the skin. Prolonged skin contact can cause
de -fatting of the skin, leading to dermatitis. In addition benzene is a
confirmed human carcinogen. These effects have been reported for pure
chemical substances.
6.0 Air Monitoring Plan
Due to the nature of the chemical hazards on site and the scope of
operations, air monitoring will be conducted to prevent any build up of
volatile hydrocarbons that may create an explosive hazard. In addition to
the monitoring for area build up, personnel monitoring will be considered.
The contractor will conduct monitoring, using a direct reading combustible
gas indicator, periodically during the operations to insure employee
exposure levels are not exceeding the Cal -OSHA (GISO Section 5155)
allowable limits. In the event that any limits are exceeded during the
operations, the safety officer shall remove any affected employees and
evaluate the area and conduct any mitigation necessary to insure working
conditions are brought back to a safe manner.
Prepared By: December 18, 1998
Environmental & Safety Resources Page 6
(510) 536-6444
