GOLD BOND BUILDING PRODUCTS 2 25 MAY 1986
PRELIMINARY SITE ASSESSMENT
Investigate the history and use of the tanks and products they contain or may have contained.
Chemical data e.g., solubility, specific gravity, octanol-water coefficient, etc., for identified
compounds should be summarized. This information should be used to assess whether the
compounds will readily adsorb onto the soil column, float on the phreatic water surface and to
what extent they may dissolve in ground water.
WASTE SOLVERT TANKS
• Both tanks are positioned vertically in the ground with what appears to be a removable top and
no place to attach a chain. How will these tanks be removed without destroying the integrity
of the tanks?
• A soil sampling plan should be submitted for definition of the horizontal and vertical extent of
soil pollution, if any, resulting from tank leakage and the obvious spills surrounding the
tanks. This should include soil borings to ground water around the tank and borings to
ground water below the tank. Analyses should include EPA 601 , 602, PCBs, metals and any
other compound(s) stored in the tanks not covered by these analyses.
• Gold Bond should remove contaminated asphalt and soil in the area surrounding the waste
solvent tanks.
• A ground water assessment plan designed to define the local gradients and assess if any
pollution of the ground water has occurred. A minimum of three monitoring wells are
necessary, one "upgradient"and two in the tank area.
PRODUCT TANK
It is our understanding that the tanks have not and will not be precision tested. Inventory
reconciliation also has not been submitted. In short, no data on the integrity of the tanks has
been submitted. Therefore, Gold Bond should submit a more detailed tank removal and soil
sampling plan for these tanks . Due to the tanks close proximity to ground water, monitoring
wells may be necessary if soil contamination is found. Gold Bond's revised plan should address
