CWC 792: Liquids With pH<2 With Metals <br />Site 2006 Quantity (lb)2010 quantity (lb) <br />SLAC 15,504 14,798 <br />3.1 Metal Finishine Process <br />This waste stream is generated as a result of the metal finishing operations. The acids are <br />used to chemically treat metal surfaces or prepare metal surfaces for subsequent plating. <br />This waste stream is considered Category A because it is treated on site and treated water <br />is discharged to a locally owned POTW. <br />SLAC Metal Finishing Operations at Mechanical Fabrication Department (MFD) <br />performs plating of copper, carbon steel, stainless steel, and aluminum parts. The various <br />baths provide capabilities to clean parts and plate them with metals such as nickel, <br />copper, tin, rhodium, indium, silver and gold. <br />Source reduction measures implemented to date include careful monitoring of acid baths <br />and plating baths to prolong their useful life. Once spent, the materials are sent to the <br />Metal Finishing Pretreatment Facility (MFPF), formerly called Rinse Water Treatment <br />Facility) for treatment and disposal. The MFPF is a pretreatment system that allows <br />SLAC to meet sanitary sewer discharge requirements of the Clean Water Act for metal <br />finishing operations. SLAC is authorized to perform this operation under the California <br />Tiered Permit program. <br />The quantity of acid baths generated did not change significantly from 2006 to 2010. No <br />reduction measures were proposed in 2006 except to continue careful monitoring of the <br />acid baths to prolong their useful life. <br />111. Category B <br />CWC 121: Alkaline solution (pH>or-12.5) with metals <br />Site 2006 quantity (lb) 12010 quantity (lb) <br />LBNL 3,080 lbs 3,775 <br />1.1 Building 77 Parts Cleanine Facility <br />This waste stream is generated as a result of metal surface cleaning operations. Metal <br />parts are cleaned through a multi step process including the following: Ultrasonic <br />degreasing; washing with commercial industrial cleaners (such as 909,); Surface cleaning <br />with alkaline solutions, and DI -water and tap water rinsing. The waste stream consists of <br />spent solutions that must be changed periodically to maintain effectiveness. This waste <br />stream is currently collected and shipped to offsite treatment and disposal. The majority <br />of this waste generated in 2010 was CWC 135. <br />This waste was evaluated for treatment in the on-site treatment system.
