CWC 132: Aqueous solution with metals

<br />In the 2007 SB14 Plan, the total CWC 132 waste was stated as 32,985 lbs, however of
<br />that, no single process generated a sufficient quantity of waste to meet the SB 14 reporting
<br />threshold of greater than 5% of the total waste stream. Although below the SB14
<br />reporting threshold, the two processes documented in the 2007 SB 14 plan are addressed
<br />here for completeness. These two processes together generated 30,163 lbs. The
<br />remaining 2,822 lbs from the 2007 SB 14 plan were not addressed.
<br />Note that 17,735 Ibs of CWC 132 waste generated in 2010 from floor care operations is
<br />addressed in section 3.3. In 2006, this waste stream was characterized as CWC 134.
<br />2.1 Industrial Machines Operations
<br />Industrial machine operations generated a total of 27,179 lbs of CWC 132 (16,350 lbs)
<br />and CWC 134 (10,829 lbs) wastes, mainly coolant and water during 2006. In 2010,
<br />similar processes generated 14,014 lbs. The volume of waste generated annually from
<br />these types of processes remains below the SB14 reporting threshold and is not included
<br />in the 2011 Plan.
<br />2.2 B321AB322 Plating Shops Operations
<br />In 2006, 13,813 lbs of this waste were generated; various plating shop operations in B321
<br />generated the majority of this waste (12,278 lbs of aqueous solutions) plus an additional
<br />amount of aqueous waste that was sent through the 13322 water reclamation unit. During
<br />2010, 25,548 lbs of aqueous solutions were generated, including 23,700 from rinsing
<br />etching tank operations in B321 and no aqueous waste was sent through the B322 water
<br />reclamation unit.
<br />Previously, B321 and B322 rinse solutions were combined and reclaimed through an
<br />evaporator unit in B322. In 2009, aqueous solutions from B321 were no longer sent to
<br />B322 for reclamation. They are now sent through the DWTF (see section 3.1 B322
<br />Plating Shop Rinse Water Recycling). The amount of CWC 132 waste generated shows
<br />an increase only because the aqueous waste that was previously recycled in B322 is now
<br />processed in a different area DWTF.
<br />CWC 134: Aqueous Solution with Total Organic Residues Less Than 10

<br />In the 2007 SB14 Plan, the total CWC 134 waste was stated as 1,396,888 lbs, including
<br />1,344,102 lbs of reclaimed wastewater. Of the remaining 52,786 lbs reported for CWC
<br />134 in the 2007 SB14 Plan, only the floor stripping process generated a sufficient
<br />quantity (22,384) of waste to meet the SB 14 reporting threshold of greater than 5% of the
<br />total 2006 waste stream. Although below the SB 14 reporting threshold, other larger
<br />waste streams also mentioned in the 2007 SB14 Plan are addressed here for
<br />completeness. The remaining 5,557 lbs from the 2007 SB14 Plan were not addressed.
<br />3.1 B322 Plating Shop Rinse Water Recvcline
<br />Water used for rinsing processed parts in B321 plating shops is typically contaminated
<br />with organic chemicals and heavy metals used in plating operations.
<br />The wastewater generated from this process is recycled using an evaporator unit at B322.
<br />The rinse water is reused in B322. The evaporator process results in a significant
<br />reduction in aqueous waste disposed.
<br />The 2007 SB14 Plan included a CWC 134 waste stream of 1,344,102 lbs, which was
<br />attributed to rinse water processed and reused in the Engineering plating shop. Although
<br />a large volume of water (approximately 168,000 gallons) was processed through the unit,
<br />only a small fraction (approximately 660 gallons/year) was actually disposed of as
<br />hazardous waste. The remaining liquid was returned to the plating shop process.
<br />Because the water was recycled, the 2007 SB14 Plan did not include it in Category B
<br />calculations, although it was documented in the plan.
<br />For 2010, the recycled rinse water unit is still operational and continues to generate only
<br />about 330 gallons every six months that is disposed off site.
<br />3.2 Industrial Machines Operations
<br />Please see section 2.1 for a discussion of the 10,829 lbs of CW C 134 waste generated
<br />from industrial machine operations.
<br />3.3 Floor Strippine Waste
<br />The floor stripping process generated approximately 22,384 lbs of CWC 134 waste in
<br />2006 and 17,735 lbs of CWC 132 waste in 2010, showing a slight decrease in total waste
<br />generated from this activity. During 2010, LLNL consolidated all the floor effluents at
<br />B581/418 and reclassified it from CWC 134 to CWC 132 because of presence of heavy
<br />metals.
