LABORATORY WASTE CHEMICAL GENERATION PROCESS <br />Laboratory waste chemicals are generated from multiple operations at SNUCA. In 2010 <br />some of the largest generators were the Maintenance -Engineering, Materials Chemistry <br />Department, Systems Biology Department, Material Physics Department, and the Engine <br />Combustion Laboratory. The Maintenance -Engineering Department is responsible for <br />preventative and routine maintenance of the facilities and grounds at SNUCA. The other <br />departments conduct collaborative research and development with industries and <br />academic institutions resulting in new and enhanced technologies that have both <br />commercial and national security benefits. The generation of this waste stream is from <br />the use of chemicals or maintenance products in laboratory operations and/or <br />preventative and/or routine maintenance of the facilities and grounds. <br />SOURCE REDUCTION/POLLUTION PREVENTION EVALUATION <br />Description of Measure: <br />In April 2009 the SNUCA site management decided to close the Paint shop and <br />outsource all required painting activities. The majority of painting currently conducted <br />onsite is for renovation work or new construction. <br />The closure of the Paint Shop has resulted in a reduction of the generation of laboratory <br />waste chemicals at SNIJCA. <br />SNUCA has implemented several administrative measures to reduce the generation of <br />laboratory waste chemicals. These measures include <br />• Disallowing chemical purchases on a Procard <br />• Reviewing each chemical purchase <br />• Utilizing a chemical exchange program <br />In addition, Pollution Prevention staff review SOPS for activities conducted onsite. This <br />allows feedback to be provided to station possible waste reduction opportunities. The <br />Pollution Prevention staff also attends the biweekly Interdisciplinary Team meetings to <br />ensure new projects or modified projects implement waste reduction opportunities. All <br />of the measures above are ongoing and it is expected that the generation of this waste <br />stream will be reduced in time as a result of the administrative measures. <br />September 1, 2011 SB 14 Plan 58 September 1, 2011 SB 14 Plan 59 <br />
