16.5.1.2 In the case of eye contact, flush the eyes for a minimum of 15 minutes
for acids and a minimum of 30 minutes for bases. The victim must keep
the eyes open with the fingers while rolling their eyes. No chemicals
other than cold water may be used for rinsing eyes. 'Keep flushing
eyes until paramedics take over.
16.5.1.3 In the case of skin contact, remove all contaminated clothing and
continue to wash skin under the shower.
16.5.1.4 An injured employee must always be accompanied by an ERT at all
times while using an emergency eyewash/shower.
16.5.2 If chemical inhalation occurs remove the victim to fresh air. Provide oxygen if
the victim is having problems breathing. Provide CPR if the victim stops
breathing. NOTE: Oxygen is located in the Occupational Health Coordinator
office, on the counter in the northeast corner of the building.
16.5.3 Any employee who is exposed to hazardous materials and is being
transported to a hospital or clinic must be decontaminated prior to leaving the
contaminated area. MSDS's are located
in the Quality Control Laboratory. Always refer to MSDS sheets for proper
first aid procedures.
17.0 OUTSIDE AGENCY NOTIFICATION 1 WORKING WITH THE NEWS MEDIA
The purpose of this section is to outline the procedures for notifying outside regulatory
agencies in the event of an emergency. It is important that these procedures be
followed since large fines for failure to report can result.
17.1 It is the responsibility of the Production Supervisor to assess any emergency
and determine which outside agencies if any should be notified. Primarily 911 will
summon emergency services. Depending on the severity or potential for
environmental impact, the Production Supervisor may have the ER
Coordinator/Liaison make agency notifications.
17.2 Unauthorized employees are not to contact outside agencies during emergencies
with the exception of 9-1-1 (Plant restricted phones dial #12-11).
17.3 Verbal notification to outside agencies is to be made without interfering with the
immediate control of the incident, and only after the Production Supervisor is
informed of the incident.
HIO'Contingency Plan Page 19 06/23/99
