LED LFR
' Toluene was detected at 9 of the 17 sidewall sampling locations at concentrations ranging from
' 680µg/kg in sample SS-15 to 66,000 in sample SS-10. Ethylbenzene was detected in 10 of the 17
collected soil samples at concentrations ranging from 34 µg/kg in sample SS-5 to 11,000 µg/kg in
sample SS-10. Total xylenes were detected in 14 of the 17 sidewall sampling locations at
concentrations ranging from 890µg/kg in sample SS-2 to 750,000 in sample SS-10.
MTBE was the only fuel oxygenate detected above laboratory reporting limits in the confirmation
' soil samples. A single sample, SS-1, contained MTBE at a concentration of 9,000 µg/kg.
Groundwater Sampling Results
TPH-DRO was detected in both groundwater samples GW-1 and GW-2 at concentrations of 1.8
and 31 milligrams per liter (mg/1), respectively. TPH-GRO was also detected in both collected
groundwater samples at concentrations of 8.0 mg/l (sample GW-1) and 39 mg/l (sample GW-2).
TPH-JFRO was not detected in either of the groundwater samples collected from beneath the
excavation.
' BTEX compounds also were detected in groundwater samples collected at the site. Benzene was
detected in groundwater samples GW-1 and GW-2 at concentrations of 3,800 and 4,800
' micrograms per liter (µg/1), respectively. Toluene was detected in both collected groundwater
samples at concentrations of 36 µg/1 (sample GW-1) and 9,400 µg/l (sample GW-2). Ethylbenzene
was detected in groundwater samples GW-1 and GW-2 at concentrations of 51 and 1,300 µg/l,
' respectively. Total xylenes were detected in the groundwater sample collected at location GW-2
only at a concentration of 6,500 µg/1.
' The fuel oxygenates MTBE (850 µg/1) and TAME (67 µg/1) were detected in groundwater samples
collected from location GW-1 only.
' Summary and Recommendations
Excavation of petroleum hydrocarbon-impacted soils and product recovery was performed until no
evidence of product or significant soil staining was observed, or until further excavation could not
be performed without compromising the integrity of operational equipment within the manifold
' area.
Remedial activities conducted at the site resulted in the recovery of approximately 160 gallons of
' product, 450 gallons of petroleum hydrocarbon-impacted water, 17 drums of spent absorbent pads
and PPE, and the removal and disposal of approximately 189 tons of petroleum hydrocarbon-
impacted gravel and soil containing approximately 5,525 pounds of TPH-DRO and 1,530 pounds
' of TPH-GRO.
Upon completion of excavation activities, no additional product was observed within the
' excavation area. These observations suggest that remedial activities were successful in removing
the majority of the transmix product released from the back-pressure valve. Additionally,
7
