breathing apparatus shall be worn. Air purifying respirators
shall be worn only when the contaminant Is known and, the levels
of contamination in ppm Is measured using a Draeger air
sampling pump with appropriate sampling tube and, the measured
levels of contamination do not exceed the limitations posted
on the appropriate cartridge and, the measured levels of
contamination do not exceed the American Conference of Govern-
mental Industrial Hygienists (AGCIH) Threshold Limit Valve
(TLV) or Time Weight Allowance (TWA) of the contaminant times
the protection factor (PF) of the air purifying respirator.
Scott has established a PF of 100 for the Scott-O-Vista face-
piece, TEC shall use a PF of 50. An air supplied line
breather may be used when the contaminant levels exceed those
for an air purifying respirator but the contaminated area
is not an IDLH atmosphere. At any time the levels of
contamination cannot be determined an SCBA shall be used.
All air purifying cartridges shall be disposed of daily
and/or when breakthrough Is detected whichever occurs first.
Air purifying respirators shall be worn for nuisance dusts,
mists, and particles but shall not be worn when the odor
threshold is above the TLV.
LIMITATIONS;
Air purifying respirators are not capable of supplying oxygen
so cannot be used in an atmosphere of less than 19.5% oxygen.
The use of air purifying respirators is limited to
concentrations of contaminants posted on the cartridge
or 50 times the PF whichever is less. Air supplied line
breathers cannot be used in IDLH atmospheres without
the use of an approved emergency egress system. No
respiratory protection device can be used if an adequate
face seal cannot be attained. No one can wear a respirator
while wearing a beard, sideburns or any device such as eye
glasses that could interfere with the face seal. Dentures
and facial scars must also be considered. No one can wear
contact lenses while wearing a respirator.
RECORDS:
Records shall be maintained by the safety officer of
all Inspections and repairs of respiratory protective
equipment.
