Page 13 of 78 <br /> backfill shall be piled in-an orderly manner a sufficient distance from <br /> the banks of the trench to avoid overloading and to prevent slides or <br /> cave-ins. All excavated asphalt/concrete tops and concrete foundations <br /> shall be hauled off the Depot by the Contractor. Unless otherwise <br /> indicated, excavation shall be started by open cut. Where gravel finish <br /> surface exist, gravels shall be scraped off to earth grade and piled in <br /> an area designated by the Contracting Officer prior to excavation. <br /> Preceding gravel shall be used as surface finish after backfill. <br /> Gravel surface sites are Warehouse 30 and north of Bldg. 203. <br /> 2-06. BAQCFTLLINC: Backfilling shall not begin until certified soil test <br /> resu is ve been provided. If results verify non-contamination, <br /> authorization to proceed backfilling will be granted by the <br /> Contracting Officer. <br /> 2-06.1 Backfill Materials: Contractor shall provide additional <br /> quantity of ba_ck=1 material and shall be used first. <br /> Satisfactory material as determined by the Contracting Officer <br /> shall be used in fills. Satisfactory material shall be free <br /> from roots, other organic matter, trash, debris and stones <br /> larger than 3 inches in any'dimension, with not greater than 35 <br /> percent fines, a liquid limit not exceed 35 and a plasticity <br /> index not exceeding'12. Excavated suitable material for <br /> backfill shall be used' last. <br /> 2-06.2 Pr ration of Ground Surfaces: Unsatisfactory material (as <br /> ed termin y <br /> the Contracting fficer) in surfaces to receive <br /> s fill shall be removed. The surface shall be scarified to a <br /> depth of 6 inches before fill is started. When subgrades are of <br /> less than 95 percent dc{psity, the grqund surface shall be broken <br /> up, pulverized, and compacted to the specified density. <br /> 2-06.3 Placing: Backfill material shall be placed in horizontal layers <br /> not exceeding 8 inches in loose depth and then compacted. No <br /> material shall be placed on surfaces that are muddy. <br /> 2-06.4 Compaction shall be performed by rolling with approved tamping <br /> ro ers, or other equipment approved by the Contracting Officer <br /> suited to the soil being compacted. Material shall be moistened <br /> or aerated as necessary to provide the moisture content that <br /> will readily facilitate obtaining the specified compaction with <br /> the equipment used. Each layer shall be compacted to not less <br /> than 95 percent. <br /> -02 <br />
