• Examination of the exhalation and inhalation valves for any foreign material, <br />cracks, tears, distortion in the valve. Additional checks will be made to inspect <br />for proper insertion, defective valve covers or improper installation. <br />• Examination of air purifying elements for incorrect cartridge, expired shelf -life <br />of the cartridge, cracks or dents in the cartridge or cartridge holder. <br />• Examination of proper insertion of the cartridges into the face piece and a check <br />of the gaskets inside the cartridge holder. <br />When Level C protection is required, respiratory cartridges will be changed daily, when <br />breakthrough occurs or there is a change in breathing resistance. All respirators shall be <br />inspected prior to each day's use. If broken or malfunctioning parts are found during the <br />cleaning process, these parts will be replaced or new respiratory equipment will be issued to <br />the user. <br />The respiratory protective equipment will be stored in an area protected from any mechanical <br />damage. These devices will also be stored in a location that provides protection against dust, <br />heat, excessive moisture, or damage by chemical contact. The storage area for the respirators <br />shall be in a readily accessible location. <br />The following rules must be adhered to by all personnel who may be required to wear <br />respiratory protection during the project: <br />• Only employees who have been trained to wear and maintain respirators properly <br />shall be allowed to use respiratory protection. <br />• Selection of respirators, as well as any decisions regarding upgrading or <br />downgrading of respiratory protection, will be made by the Health and Safety <br />officer. <br />• Positive and negative pressure tests shall be performed each time the respirator is <br />donned. <br />• Only employees who have been fit tested within the last 12 months will be <br />allowed to work in atmospheres where respirators are required. Subcontractors <br />shall provide certificates of respirator fit test completed within the last 12 <br />months for each employee onsite. <br />• Respirator users shall be instructed in the proper use and limitations of <br />respirators. <br />MZ/07-07-92/EES/ENG/2054r 3-10 <br />
