JJD 7-28-86 CONSTRUCTION STANDARDS FOR NEW MOTOR VEHICLE FUEL UNDERGROUND STORAGE TANKS 1.0 Primary Containers 1.1 Primary containers used for underground storage of motor vehicle fuel shall be constructed of glass -fiber reinforced plastic, steel clad with glass -fiber reinforced plastic, or cathodically protected steel. 1.2 Primary containers shall be fabricated and designed to standards developed by Underwriters Laboratories or be listed by Under- writers Laboratories. 1.3 Primary containers shall be tested by the manufacturer or an independent testing organization for durability and chemical compatibility with the motor vehicle fuel to be stored. Contact A -BC Environmental Engineering in cases involving underground storage of alcohol -modified fuels in fiberglass tanks or pipes. 1.4 Except for steel underground storage tanks, a wear plat (striker plate) shall be centered under all accessible openings of the underground storage tank. The plate shall be constructed of steel with a minimum width of 9 inches, a minimum area of one square foot, and a minimum thickness of 0.053 inches. The plate shall be rolled to the contours of the underground storage tank and bonded or seam -welded in place. 1.5 Single -walled and double -walled steel underground storage tanks, which are not clad with glass -fiber reinforced plastic, shall be protected by a properly installed, maintained, and monitored cathodic protection system. Selection of the type of protection to be employed shall be based on the judgement of a registered corrosion engineer, or a National Association of Corrosion Engin- eers (NAGE) accredited corrosion specialist, taking into account the corrosion history of the area. Underground storage tanks in a vault and not backfilled are exempted from section 1.5. 1.6 Primary containers shall be installed according to the manufac— turers' written recommendations. 1.7 Primary containers shall be tested before being put into service in accordance with applicable sections of the Code under which they were built. The ASME code stamp, or Listing Mark of Under- writers Laboratories, Inc. (UL), or any other nationally recog- nized independent testing firm shall be evident of compliance with this requirement.
