23 March 2004
AGE-NC Project No. 03-1055
yards were generated during initial excavation on 20 and 21 October 2003; an additional 370 cubic
yards were excavated during the interim remedial action of 10, 11, and 12 November 2003. Copies
of the soil disposal receipts from Forward Landfill are provided in Appendix B.
3.0. FINDINGS
The contamination to soil and ground water was assessed by laboratory analysis of the collected soil
and ground water samples. The laboratory analysis of impacted soil, combined with weight record
of the disposed soil, provided an estimate of the hydrocarbon mass removed.
3.1. ANALYTICAL RESULTS OF SOIL SAMPLES
6' TPH-g was detected in four of the ten soil samples analyzed at concentrations as high as 39
milligrams per kilogram(mg/kg).TPH-d was also detected in four of the ten soil samples submitted
for TPH-d analysis at concentrations as high as 460 mg/kg.
Petroleum hydrocarbons were detected in one (UST-4) of the four soil samples collected from
beneath the 500-gallon UST; TPH-g and TPH-d were detected at concentrations of 39 milligrams
per kilogram (mg/kg) and 120 mg/kg, respectively; and BTEX and MTBE were detected at
concentrations of 0.028 mg/kg benzene,0.14 mg/kg toluene,0.030 mg/kg ethylbenzene,0.23 mg/kg
total xylenes, and 0.095 mg/kg MTBE. Lead was detected in all four of the UST samples, with a
maximum concentration in UST-4 of 14 mg/kg.No other analytes were detected in the soil samples
collected from beneath the 500-gallon UST.
No analytes of concern were detected in the five soil samples (EXC-1 through EXC-5) collected
from the side walls of the excavation.
One or more BTEX compounds were detected in at least two of the ten soil samples at
concentrations as high as 0.028 mg/kg benzene, 0.14 mg/kg toluene, 0.30 mg/kg ethylbenzene and
0.23 mg/kg total xylenes. MTBE was detected in two of the ten soil samples collected at
concentrations as high as 0.095 mg/kg. Total lead was detected in all of the soil samples collected
at concentrations as high as 22 mg/kg. Analytical results of the soil samples are summarized in
Table 2.
Four samples were collected from the excavated soil stockpile and were laboratory-composited into
one composite sample, STK7,8,9,10. TPH-g was detected in the sample at a concentration of
1.2 mg/kg. No other analytes were detected in STK 7,8,9,10.
` Six additional samples were collected from the excavated soil stockpile and analyzed.
•— Advanced GeoEnvironmental,Inc.
n.
