• The hand-spraying process is divided into two areas that generate the
same waste stream. One is contained in an enclosed building with
three, 6 foot by 6 foot cabinet type exhaust/filter units to capture
overspray and particulate matter as well as providing sufficient airflow
for operator safety. The second system is contained in a partially
enclosed building with a filter/exhaust fan to provide uniform air flow
in all parts of the paint room.
The water-based paint waste streams are composed of the dried pigments
and solids of the paint. When the water evaporates, the constituent
chemicals are left from each stream and have been determined to be
hazardous waste. Analytical reports show zinc, chromium, barium, and
other trace elements are present. These hazardous waste streams are
considered routinely generated from on-going processes. All hazardous
waste from the surface coating processes at Star Buildings is transported in
one (1) cubic yard containers by North State Environmental. The dried
paint waste is transported to Filter Recycling Services in Rialto, CA. Filter
Recycling mixes the waste with other solids that are used in road base, and
or fill.
(5) CWC Code#252—Paint Filters
(a) Estimate of the weight, in pounds, of waste generated at the site per year:
900 pounds per year.
(b) CWC Code: #252
(c) Processes, operations, and activities generating the waste, with
corresponding block diagram: See Appendix A.
The spray process generates Star Buildings hazardous paint filter waste:
Steel beams are spray painted using a Graco HVLP spray system within an
enclosed building. The buildings are equipped with multiple fans, and
filter bank plenums. These filters are periodically changed and stored in
DOT approved 55-gallon fiber drums for disposal.
Dried paint filter waste is generated in this process, and stored for
transport by North State Environmental. The dried paint waste is
transported to Filter Recycling Services in Rialto, CA. Filter Recycling
mixes the waste with other solids that are used in road base, and or fill.
(6) CWC Code#213 — Solvent
(a) Estimate of the weight, in pounds, of waste generated at the site per year: 214.4 pounds
per year.
8
