(9) CWC code#181 —Welding Flux
(a) Estimate of the weight, in pounds, of waste generated at the site per year: 40,690 pounds
per year.
(b) CWC Code: #181
(c) Processes, operations, and activities generating the waste, with
• i. corresponding block diagram: See Appendix E.
Welding flux is used in the submerged arc welding process, to reduce
imperfections in the automated welding process. The flux is very similar to
fine grain sand and is composed of silicates, manganese, zirconium, and
quartz.
This waste is stored and shipped in super sack containers, that hold up to
2200 pounds of waste. This waste is stored for 90 days, or less, and then
transported by North State Environmental to Filter Recycling Services in
Rialto, CA. Filter Recycling mixes the waste with other solids that are
used in road base, and or fill.
(d) Evaluation of Source Reduction Measures: The evaluation methods incorporate the
required waste minimization elements and are designed to follow the order of CCR
Sections 67100.5 0), (k), (1), (m), (n), (o), (p), and(q).
The following source reduction measures have been considered for CWC # 331 Dried Paint
Waste Stream:
1) One method of reducing paint waste generated would be the use of a new painting process
(electrostatic) where the structural members are sprayed, and at least 95% of the product
would be transferred to the beam.
• Input Changes -N/A The same raw materials would be used in either the old process
or an electrostatic process.
• Operational Improvements - An entirely new electrostatic painting system with
custom designed conveyors, painting equipment, exhaust system, and computer
controls would have to be purchased and/or built.
• Production Process Change-The electrostatic system would require a longer time
frame to complete the process on each structural member and would change the entire
production scheduling of the final product.
• Product Reformulations -N/A The same steel beams would be used as well as the
same types of primer, and paint used.
• Administrative Steps—Star Buildings continues to work with paint vendors and
equipment suppliers to achieve less waste and more efficient painting operation.
Evaluation of the considered source reduction measure:
10
