• Company policy or mission statement demonstrating that commitment to all
employees, business partners, and customers;
• The support of employee training and monitoring;
• The establishment of incentive programs to encourage employees to design and use
new waste minimization ideas and those who successfully improve their work
practices and techniques resulting in a successful reduction in the generation of
hazardous waste. •
4) The persuasion of Star Buildings' paint vendor, Trinity Coatings, to begin supplying their
paint in 50 gallon fiber drums(as of 6/1/2003 this has been accomplished).
• This container type can be recycled.
• The containers generate little or no waste;
For source reduction measures (2), (3), and(4):
• Input Changes -N/A The same raw materials would be used in the production
process.
• Operational Improvements -N/A No major operational changes would be necessary.
• Production Process Changes -N/A No major production processes would be
necessary.
• Product Reformulations -N/A The same steel beams and the same primer, and paint
would be used.
• Administrative Steps - Management must provide support and staff time to complete
the following tasks: The evaluation of current work practices. All possible more-
efficient methods of performing tasks related to the paint process would have to be
studied and noted with a system devised for evaluating success. The needed
employee training would have to be developed and implemented. The suggested
employee incentive program would have to be developed and implemented.
NOTE: For measure#4, the administrative steps would focus more on the
relationship between Star Buildings and the vendor than on employee use of the
containers.
Evaluation of suggested source reduction measures (2), (3), and (4):
• Change in Hazardous Waste -There would be a significant reduction in the
generation of hazardous paint waste.
• Technical Feasibility- The measures are technically feasible.
• Economic Evaluation- There is minimal cost for Star Buildings to allot time and
resources for the evaluation,development, and implementation of the suggested
measures.
• Effects on Product Quality-There are no projected effects on product quality.
12
