•
•
Page
2
'
Central Valley geomorphic province of California.
Proj.
No. E88-029
GEOLOGIC AND HYDROLOGIC SETTINGS
17,
1 PURPOSE AND SCOPE OF THE INVESTIGATION
' The purpose of this investigation was to determine if petroleum
constituents were present in the subsoils at the location beneath the previous
underground storage tanks.
The scope of this investigation was limited to the immediate vicinity of
the underground storage tank excavation.
1
KRAZAN & ASSOCIATES, INC.
The project site is located within the City of Ripon, California, just inside
the southern boundary of San Joaquin County. Ripon is located within the Great
'
Central Valley geomorphic province of California.
The topography of the site is relatively level. Subsurface materials consist
primarily of unconsolidated materials deposited by the Stanislaus River and its
tributaries. The Stanislaus River is a part of the San Joaquin River System. The
alluvial deposits are generally composed of sands, silty sands, and some minor
gravels derived from Sierra Nevada source rocks.
The project site is located within the San Joaquin Basin Hydrologic Study
Area, which is primarily an and to semi -arid environment. Within the study
area, 37 groundwater basins and areas of potential groundwater storage have
'
been identified. Storage capacity in this study area is approximately 570 million
acre-feet. Useable storage totals 80 million acre-feet. Fresh -water bearing
deposits, generally alluvium, have a maximum thickness of 4,400 feet.
The area in which the project site is located is part of the Eastern San
Joaquin County Basin. This basin is subject to extensive overdraft conditions.
Overdraft is a condition in which more groundwater is withdrawn than is being
replenished by natural and man-made means. Because of this overdraft problem,
'
declining water levels have caused poor quality waters (delta saline waters)
from the Stockton area to migrate toward the project site.
17,
1 PURPOSE AND SCOPE OF THE INVESTIGATION
' The purpose of this investigation was to determine if petroleum
constituents were present in the subsoils at the location beneath the previous
underground storage tanks.
The scope of this investigation was limited to the immediate vicinity of
the underground storage tank excavation.
1
KRAZAN & ASSOCIATES, INC.
