No. E98-029
METHODOLOGY
' In order to accomplish those potentials described in the scope of the
investigation section of this report, the following methods were employed:
'
1. No permits were necessary for the soil borings as revealed by
conversations with Harlan Knoll of the San Joaquin Local Health ,
'
District.
2. The exploratory soil borings were advanced by means of a
Simco 2800 truck -mounted drill rig utilizing 4 1/2 inch hollow stem
1
auger. Drilling fluids were not used while advancing the borings.
3. Drilling and sampling equipment used for the investigation
were steam -cleaned prior to arrival on site.
4. Two exploratory soil borings were placed at a location
immediately south of the center of the previous underground
'
storage tanks. These borings were placed so as to avoid concrete
slabs that had been poured over the previous tank locations. Both
soil borings were advanced at a 540 angle to a depth which would
Iallow
for samples to be obtained at 15 feet below existing grade.
5. Soil samples were obtained by means of pushing stainless steel
tubes at discrete intervals (ASTM D-1587-86, "Thin-walled Tube
Sampling of Soils").
6. Auger cuttings were disposed of on-site following field
1
screening by an H -nu portable photoionization detector. The
photoionization detector is capable of detecting volatile
hydrocarbons as a trace gas.
'
7. Following the sampling of subsoils, both borings were
backfilled with a neat cement.
i8.
Samples were collected, maintained, and transported under
chain of custody protocol to a state approved laboratory for
chemical analysis. Two soil samples were analyzed to detect the
presence and concentration of benzene, toluene, xylenes,
ethylbenzene., total petroleum hydrocarbons (as gasoline), total lead,
and ethylene dibromide at the instructions of the San Joaquin Local
1
Health District official present.
9. All field work was conducted under standards set forth by
industry and deemed acceptable by various regulatory agencies.
Hard hats, protective eyewear, stee-toed boots, protective clothing,
and respiratory devices were to be worn by field personnel when
deemed appropriate by the field geologist present.
IKRAZAN & ASSOCIATES, INC.
