•
4 . Schedule for Completion
The wells are scheduled to be complete by January 1989
in accordance with the workplan.
TASK 3--GROUNDWATER MONITORING
1 . Progress made this quarter
Water levels were measured in all accessible wells in
March and May, 1988 (Figure 1 and 2) . Wells A-8 and
DSW-4C were pumping at 7 and 36 gpm, respectively.
Groundwater samples were collected from 25 monitoring
wells. All samples were analyzed for volatile aromatics
(EPA Method 602) , phenols (Method 604) PAHs (Method 610) ,
arsenic, copper, and total chromium. Two samples were
analyzed by Methods 624 and 625 (volatile and semi-
volatile organics by GC-MS) . QA/QC included analysis
of six duplicate samples and six field blanks . Analyt-
ical reports are included in Appendix A. DHS collected
a duplicate of the DSW-7C sample for State analysis .
The sampling and analytical results confirm the previous
interpretations of the nature and extent of contamina-
tion, as discussed in the February 1988 Quarterly Report
and in the Technical Memorandum dated February 11 ,
1988 . Tables of GC-MS results and QA/QC sample data
are included in Appendix A.
2 . Problems Identified
Well A-9 has repeatedly been damaged by plant operations
and is presently out of service. The well is located
in a heavy equipment traffic area. Because the well
cannot be reliably maintained and does not perform
efficiently as an extraction well , A-9 should be
abandoned.
The groundwater monitoring program has succeeded in
characterizing several of the affected wells , to the
extent that additional data are not presently needed.
Collecting and analyzing samples from wells already
characterized as "affected" wastes resources that could
be applied toward remediation. Future sampling efforts
will concentrate on those wells that are not suffi-
ciently characterized, or that define the limits of
contamination. Wells that are considered sufficiently
characterized will not be sampled quarterly. Graphs of
contaminant levels for these wells are included in
Appendix A.
