0 <br /> SAFE WORK PRACTICES FOR CONTRACTORS WORKING AT RETAIL PETROLEUM/CONVENIENCE FACILITIES 15 <br /> 5.3 COMPANIES' DRIVING PROCEDURES <br /> In addition to these requirements,it is the employer's responsibility to assure that drivers understand and follow their policies for <br /> the safe operation of motor vehicles. <br /> 5.4 MOBILE PHONE PROCEDURES <br /> 5.4.1 Mobile Phones While Driving <br /> Mobile telephone use by the driver of a motor vehicle is strictly prohibited while the vehicle is in motion.This includes receiving <br /> incoming calls. <br /> • A mobile phone maybe left in the on position while the vehicle is in motion to alert the driver of an incoming call,however, <br /> the call shall not be answered. <br /> • To retrieve messages and return calls,a driver shall stop the vehicle in a safe location off the road and away from traffic. <br /> 5.4.2 Speaker Phone or Hands-free Phones <br /> Mobile phones in vehicles may have an installed speaker or hands-free kit installed.Using this speaker to answer a call,or using <br /> the hands-free equipment to make or answer a call is prohibited unless the driver stops the vehicle in a safe location off the road <br /> and away from traffic. <br /> 5.4.3 Multitasking While Driving <br /> Drivers are also discouraged from other forms of"multi-tasking"(e.g.eating,reading,note-taking,use of other electronic devices <br /> etc.)as these all impair the driver's ability to operate the vehicle safely. <br /> 5.5 PROPER PLACES TO PARK WHILE ON THE SITE <br /> 5.5.1 Parking <br /> Workers may not park vehicles on-site where they will interfere;with safe entry or exit from any building.Workers may not park <br /> vehicles on-site where they will interfere with the cashier's view of the gasoline fueling operations.Special consideration should <br /> be given to avoiding the following situations: <br /> • Restricting exit and entrance to the facility. <br /> • Restricting normal customer vehicle or pedestrian traffic patterns. <br /> • Screening customer view of traffic while exiting. <br /> • Restricting movements of delivery trucks. <br /> • Restricting access to customer services(e.g.car wash,air,water,vacuum,phone,etc.). <br /> Observe all posted parking regulations.Many sites do not allow parking at the main ID sign,unless the vehicle needs to be parked <br /> there for service work. <br /> 5.5.2 Backing Hazards <br /> Drivers shall assure that there are no hazards behind their vehicles prior to backing the vehicle.Use a spotter if necessary. <br /> 5.5.3 Entering and Exiting Vehicles <br /> Use only approved handholds and footholds when getting in and out of vehicles.When entering and exiting from vehicles,drivers <br /> shall be aware of traffic hazards. <br /> 5.6 DEFENSIVE DRIVING PRACTICES <br /> All drivers shall be appropriately licensed,trained and medically fit to operate the vehicle. <br />
