Pipe installation It is recommended that 5 to 10 psi(35 to 70 kPa)pressure be maintained in
(continued) the pipe during construction of the rest of the facility to monitor the integrity of
the pipeline. In this way damage caused by stakes, tools, etc. can be detected
and corrected before paving is installed or product is pumped through the pipe.
Pressurizing equipment should be operated by qualified and experienced
personnel only. Do not make any adjustments on pressurized fittings. For
example, if athreaded adapter is leaking, release the pressure before
attempting to tighten.
The test operation should be well planned and carried out with all due
precautions. Hydrostatic testing is recommended. Because liquids cannot be
compressed, the effects of sudden decompression due to a component failure
are far less severe with liquids than those which can occur if air is used. If it is
necessary to test with air,the system should be adequately restrained to
prevent damage or injury should rapid decompression occur.
Warning: Pneumatic testing is extremely dangerous and is not
recommended.
Repairs If the damaged area is more than one inch in diameter, follow instructions
for extensive damage. If the damaged area is less, follow instructions for
minor damage.
Extensive damage
• Cut out at least one foot(30 cm)on both sides of damaged area to ensure
that all affected material is removed and good pipe is available for cutting,
tapering and bonding.
• Taper the ends of the pipe left in place.
• Dry fit sleeve couplings on each taper.
• Cut and taper a pipe nipple long enough to insert fully into both sleeve
couplings. Nipple length should be approximately 1h inch(12 mm)longer
than actually needed in the dry fit condition. The adhesive will act as a
lubricant during assembly yielding about 1/8 inch(3 mm)additional insertion
perjoint.
• Clean all bonding surfaces and apply adhesive to them.
• Widen the gap between the ends of the pipe by temporarily bending the
pipe or displacing a fitting. Install the repair pieces and make certain the
pipes are brought back sufficiently to properly bond the sleeve couplings
onto the pipe and pipe nipple. Use a twisting action during insertion to lock
the tapers in place.
Minor damage
Cut a length of undamaged pipe at least 10 inches(250 mm)long.
3/4 of circumference
--------------------------
r ---------------------------
L
I
10"(min)
• Cut this pipe longitudinally twice so that a repair piece three fourths of the
circumference is left.
• Thoroughly sand the inner surface of this repair section and the
corresponding area on the damaged pipe that it will cover.
• Use coarse emery cloth to remove all gloss and roughen the bonding
® surfaces.
• Use a circular carbide-tipped hole saw to cut out the damaged area and
make clean edges. Use emery cloth from adhesive kit to remove any
rough edges.
13
