Section Number: 2-1
Issue Date: 05/06/2010
Revision Date:
2-7 AIR EMISSIONS
Overview
• This section discusses the types of processes regulated by air emission regulations,
reporting requirements, information on ozone depleting substances and
recordkeeping requirements.
Key Points
Fuel burning equipment often requires a permit. Operations Support will advise.
Plants must adhere to air compliance instructions provided by Operations Support.
Fuel Combustion Equipment
• Boiler(s), tumblers, and steam tunnels may require construction and operating
permits. If you are going to add or remove any equipment that burns natural gas,
propane or fuel oil, you must notify Operations Support (Compliance & Process
Engineering at 630-271-2988) at least 90 days prior to the change.
• Plants in California are also required to control emissions from fuel combustion
equipment, e.g., low-NOx burners or flue gas recirculation. California plants must
notify Operations Support (Compliance & Process Engineering at 630-271-2988)
prior to ordering any such equipment.
Print Towel Processing
• A permit may be required for counting stations, depending on the quantity of print
towels processed.
• Operations Support, Compliance & Process Engineering, will contact plants that may
require permits for their print towel counting operations and will provide instructions.
Ozone Depleting Refrigerants
Federal regulations prohibit any person from knowingly releasing certain ozone
depleting refrigerants into the atmosphere. Technicians that service plant
refrigeration and air conditioning equipment must provide proof of
certification/training prior to the service, maintenance, repair, or disposal of
equipment, as required by the USEPA. Plants must maintain an accurate and up to
date maintenance log for all refrigeration or air conditioning equipment containing 50
pounds or more of refrigerant. Plant personnel may not service refrigeration and air
conditioning equipment.
