10 March 2000
AGE-NC Project No. 99-0628
Page 3of8
(Baumbach & Piazza) is presented in Appendix C.
3.4. SOIL SAMPLING
Soil samples were collected from all three boring locations at depths between 4 feet and 59 feet
(bsg), using a California split tube sampler loaded with three clean 2-inch by 6-inch brass sleeves.
A 140-pound hammer was utilized to advance the sampler over an 18-inch interval ahead of the
augers; the number of blows required to advance the sampler over each 6-inch increment was
recorded on the boring logs. All sampling equipment was washed in an Alconox solution and rinsed
twice with water prior to each sampling run.
Both ends of the soil sleeve of each sample collected for laboratory analysis were covered with
Teflon sheets, capped and sealed with tape. The preserved samples were labeled with boring
designation, sample depth, date and time of sampling and the sample collector's initials. The samples
were stored in a chilled container and transported under chain-of-custody to Precision Enviro-tech
(PET) of Stockton, California, a Department of Health Services (DHS)-certified laboratory.
3.5. SOIL ANALYSES
Selected samples were analyzed for the following:
• Total petroleum hydrocarbons quantified as gasoline, diesel, and motor oil (TPH-g, TPH-d,
_ and TPH-mo, respectively) in accordance with EPA Method 8015 Modified/DHS,
• Volatile aromatic compounds:benzene,toluene,ethyl-benzene and total xylenes(BTEX)and
methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE) in accordance with EPA Method 8260 Modified, and
• CAM 17 Metals, TTLC - lead by EPA Method 7420, mercury by EPA Method 7471 A, and
copper, nickel, zinc, cadmium, chromium and silver by EPA Method 6010.
3.6. SOIL LOGGING
During drilling, auger returns were monitored for the presence of organic vapor using an organic
vapor meter (OVM) equipped with a photo-ionization detector(PID: Thermo Environmental 580A,
10.0 eV, calibrated to isobutylene). Auger returns were placed on plastic and stored on the western
edge of the site, pending laboratory analysis.
Duplicate soil samples were extruded from their sleeve and were screened for the presence of organic
Advanced Geo Environmental,Inc.
