(GTI), to describe groundwater monitoring at the subject site on
May 18, 1993. The measured direction of groundwater gradient was toward the northwest. Trace
amounts (1.6 ppb) of dissolved benzene were detected in monitoring well MW-1. There were no
other dissolved hydrocarbons detected in groundwater beneath the site. The groundwater
monitoring data were requested by San Joaquin County Public Health Services (SJCPHS) in their
letter dated, April 12, 1993. Chevron voluntarily provided these data to facilitate the permitting
process for monitoring well abandonment.
In the April 12, 1993 letter, SJCPHS also requested the locations and analytical results of soil
samples obtained during a tank venting system upgrade performed in June, 1990. A copy of the
soil analytical results and sample locations from the June, 1990 tank vent work were provided to
Chevron by the former property owner. Copies have been attached for your information. It was
also requested that Chevron collect and analyze water samples from a well operated by the San
Joaquin County Fire Department on an adjacent property. No groundwater samples were collected
from the fire department's well during GTI's May site visit.
For your information, Chevron has never owned or operated any underground storage tanks or
facilities at the subject site. Our primary involvement at the site has been through our supply
contract with the service station dealer. Therefore, Chevron should not be identified as a
responsible party for any investigation or remediation that may be necessary at this site. The three
groundwater monitoring wells were installed by Chevron in May, 1991 when a purchase of the
property and facilities was being considered. The purchase never occurred. Chevron has no further
use for the three wells and would like to abandon them as soon as possible. A work plan
describing the abandonment procedure will be provided to SJCPHS for review and permitting.
I was recently contacted by one of the current property owners, Mr. Cecil Dillon. He expressed
his interest in having the monitoring wells onsite removed. He also informed me of his own efforts
toward having the wells abandoned. Apparently, Mr. Dillon's consultant, Del-Tech, has submitted
