Interim Report of findings
3 . List of work completed to date
Summary of Work Completed
The original work plan called for the installation of seven monitoring wells with the deepest wells at
55 feet below the surface or to the vertical extent of the gasoline plume. Three shallow wells were to
be installed at the existing groundwater elevation at 40 feet of depth.
The first well was drilled to 55 feet and there was still gasoline contamination present. As a result of
these findings, the drilling was continued to 120 feet where all evidence of gasoline was gone. Chemical
analysis at that depth still showed low contamination of BTEX compounds. Drilling and well
construction at this depth was very slow due to the large amount of silt and clay in the soil that made
it very difficult to remove the cuttings. The cuttings were the consistency of a thick milk shake. These
cuttings had to be bailed out of the bore hole from inside the auger before the bentonite would settle
to the desired depth. This was a very time consuming job. In later wells, the driller was ordered to use
the more expensive coated bentonite pills. The bottom line is that the deep wells had to be drilled about
twice as deep as originally planned to reach the bottom of the gasoline plume.
The two shallow wells were installed as originally planned in the work plan, and no additional time or
extra expense was required for these wells.
1 i
