U-
KLEINFELDER r
Additional,Soil to be Excavated
- Existing excavation vertically- 15 x 18 x 4 ft = 1,080 cubic ft-40 cubic yds
- East side 10 x 16 x 15 ft(deep) = 2,400 cubic ft-89 cubic yds
- West side 10 x 16 x 15 ft(deep) = 2,400 cubic ft-89 cubic yds
- North side 10 x 38 x 15 ft(deep)-5,700 cubic ft-211 cubic yds
Total Estimated Volume of Soil to be Excavated = 429 cubic yds
According to the SJLHD guidelines, the removal of 429 cubic yards would require
the collection of approximately 17 soil samples from the side walls and floor of the
excavation area to assess the presence of petroleum hydrocarbons remaining in the
excavation (Plate 3). The number of confirmation soil samples will be based on an
estimate of volume of soil removed, approximately two samples for every 50 cubic
yards removed.
Confirmation samples to be analyzed will be submitted under chain-of-custody to
Enseco-California Analytical Laboratory in West Sacramento. The samples will be
r Y` analyzed for total petroleum hydrocarbons extractable by GC-FID and benzene,
toluene, ethyl benzene, and xylene by EPA Method 8020. Ethylene dibromide and
organic lead were not detected in the original sampling and, therefore, are not
proposed for the additional excavation sampling.
5. The client intends to excavate soil around the existing excavations using a backhoe
or large excavator. The engineering and safety of the excavation will be the
responsibility of the excavation contractor. Soil will be removed from the east,
north, and west side of the existing excavation previously containing the gasoline
tanks. Soil will be segregated based on volatile hydrocarbon readings made with a
photoionization vapor detector (PID). The soil pile having positive PID readings
will be segregated and staged in an area that will permit sufficient room to move
and aerate the soil if necessary.
6. Soil removed from the excavation will be segregated as much as possible with the
PID and stockpiled onsite. The stockpiled soil will be covered with plastic to
minimize uncontrolled aeration until a disposition alternative can be selected. The
i
`.r
140-88-1809
