A *Moe
ll SAFEWAYINC. P Fr?,'-.,7; r;4,r T!
4TH &JACKSON STREETS E
OAKLAND, CA 94660 Cis 9 PM • r
January 13 , 1995 J
Mr. Steve Sasson
San Joaquin County - Environmental Health Division
224 N. San Joaquin Street
Stockton, CA 95201-0388
SUBJECT: Safeway Meat Processing Plant
1111 Navy Drive, Stockton
Review Status of Groundwater Conditions
Dear Mr. Sasson:
On December 16, 1995, ERM-West forwarded to you the
November, 1994, groundwater sampling results for the subject
property. By now you should have received and reviewed the
results. There has been virtually no change in the diesel
concentrations over the last two and one-half years. The
attached table summarizes the data to-date.
In two of four samples analyzed for coliform, positive
results have been reported for the sampling events in June
1992 and November 1994 . Drinking water standards are less
than 1 MPN/100 ml level for coliform. The most recent
sample results for November, 1994 exceed this standard by
over 100 percent. Safeway has not contributed to this
coliform problem. It is most likely due to releases from
the 36 inch to 48 inch sewer mains located within Navy St.
It is quite possible, therefore, that other contaminants may
have entered the groundwater from the sanitary sewer.
In your October 17, 1994 letter to Safeway, you requested
Safeway to prepare a workplan to assess the lateral. and
vertical extent of the hydrocarbons in soil and groundwater.
Safeway requested an extension in assessing the conditions
of the site, and you verbally granted that extension.
After reviewing the site data generated to date,
interviewing the local water purveyor (Cal Water Services
Co. ) , and reviewing other underground tank site files
located within the Navy and Charter Way area, Safeway does
not believe it would' be beneficial, financially feasible, or
necessary to pursue further site investigations. We request
that the site be considered for closure for the following
reasons:
®Recycled
Paper
