The Great Valley
is an alluvial plain where sediments have been deposited for about 160 million years. Soil
borings drilled during the Preliminary Endangerment Assessment encountered tan silty sand
in the upper 5 feet below the ground surface ("bgs"). Depth to groundwater is approximately
28 feet bgs.
2.4 Site Characterization Activities
A Preliminary Endangerment Assessment(PEA)was performed in 2010-2011 to
characterize current conditions at the Site(Arcadis 2012). During June 2010, soil samples
were collected from forty-eight locations up to depths of 2 feet bgs. During April 2011, an
additional thirteen soil samples were collected up to depths of 1.5 feet bgs. An on-Site
domestic water supply well was also sampled in 2011. In total, ninety-six samples(including
ninety-four soil samples, one ash sample, and one groundwater sample)were collected. Soil
and ash samples were analyzed by one or more of the following methods:
• California Assessment Manual ("CAM") 17(Title 22)Metals using U.S. EPA
Method 6010B
• Hexavalent chromium using U.S. EPA Method 7196A, mercury using U.S. EPA
Method 7474A, and soluble lead using U.S. EPA Method 6010B
• Organochlorine pesticides ("OCP")using U.S. EPA Method 8081A
• Dioxins using U.S. EPA Method 8290
• Semi-volatile organic compounds ("SVOC") using U.S. EPA Method 8270C
• Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons("PAH") using U.S. EPA Method 8270C SIM
• Polychlorinated biphenyls("PCB") using U.S. EPA Method 8082
• pH using U.S. EPA Method 9045D
• Total petroleum hydrocarbons ("TPH") using U.S. EPA Method 8015B
• Chlorinated herbicides using U.S. EPA Method 8151
• Organophosphate pesticides using U.S. EPA Method 8141
• Volatile organic compounds("VOC") using U.S. EPA Method 8260B
The groundwater sample was analyzed for:
• Metals by CAM 17 and EPA 6010B
• Dissolved metals by CAM 17 and EPA 6010B
Former Gordon Research Company Property 2 of 20
Removal Action Workplan
June 2017
