DDRW-WB PAGE 2
SUBJECT : Offsite Contamination of Crops and Agricultural
Supply Wells
A chain of custody was maintained for all samples taken and
is available for review if requested .
The sampling method for the crops is as follows : Samples
of walnuts were collected , two each from the young orchard
and two from the mature orchard .
Of those in the young orchard , one sample was taken from
the tree closest to the first water outfall of the number
three agricultural well and one sample farthest from that
outfall . Our reasoning being that if Agricultural Well 3
is polluted , contaminants will be highest in the outfall
closest to the well and least in water/sample farthest from
the well . Also , young trees uptake greater quantities of
water than mature trees . The mature walnut orchard was
sampled in the same manner , closest to the first outfall
for Agricultural Well 3 and farthest away from the first
outfall .
This reasoning was then applied to all other crop samples .
The alfalfa was sampled nearest to and farthest away from
the first outfall of Agricultural Till 2 . The beans were
sampled nearest to and farthest away from the first outfall
of Agricultural Well 1 .
DDRW-WB invites your comments on this process , but unless
directed otherwise feels this is an adequate investigation
of crop contamination .
The Agricultural Wells 1-3 , water samples were taken at the
first outfall closest to the respective pumps .
The 4 September 1991 , results showed contamination of
Agricultural Wells 1 and 2 , but nothing in Agricultural
Well 3 . This was unexpected because it was anticipated
that contamination would be verified in Agricultural Well 3
and nothing for 1 and 2 (Enclosure 2) .
DDRW-WB immediately contracted with American Environmental
to resample and retest .
The agricultural wells were again sampled on 9 September
1991 ; split samples were taken and the sampling location
was slightly changed .
