04 January 2005
AGE-NC Project No. 96-0235
Page 2 of 5
• Preparation of a report on the results of well installation activities and the in-situ ozone
sparge feasibility study.
Based upon results from several air-sparging and ozone-injection projects in the San Joaquin County
area, it has been AGE's experience that iron (metal) fouling of sparge points has been not
detrimental to the site remediation;while two of the projects are in the city of Stockton and near the
site with similar hydrogeologic setting (including Fire Station No. 2) have demonstrated overall
successful results.
A "bench scale test" or laboratory scale analysis will be performed prior to implementation of the
active pilot study to determine if any site-specific conditions (e.g, metal-fouling of injectors) exist
that may"render the pilot study ineffective"or produce additional water quality degradation. Sparge
point fouling can be corrected by introduction of dilute cleaning fluids,including low concentrations
of HCL,into the sparge wells.During the installation of the proposed ozone sparge points,AGE will
collect soil and, if necessary, ground water samples from the pilot borings. These samples will be
submitted to a California Department of Health Services (DHS)-certified laboratory to analyze for
their general mineral content.
2.1. PERMITTING AND PRE-FIELD WORK ACTIVITIES
Applicable site assessment permits will be submitted to the San Joaquin County Environmental
Health Department (EHD) and a health and safety plan will be prepared in accordance with
Occupational Safety and Health Guidance Manual for Hazardous Waste Site Activities (National
Institute for Occupational Safety and Health Administration, U.S. Coast Guard and U.S.
Environmental Protection Agency, 1985).Prior to drilling activities,each proposed drilling location
will be clearly marked and a utility clearance obtained through Underground Service Alert.
2.2. OZONE INJECTION WELL INSTALLATION
Based on concentrations of TPH, benzene and MTBE in the area of northern UST area, AGE
proposes installation of a total of 10 ozone injection wells in the following areas:
• Approximately 10 and 20 feet south of wells MW-10, EW-1 and boring B9;
• Approximately 10 to 20 feet north of east of wells MW-10, EW-1 and boring 139;
• Approximately 10 to 15 feet west of wells MW-10, EW-1 and boring B9 and
• Approximately located at well MW-9 and 10 to 15 feet north of well MW-9.
Advanced GeoEnvi ron mental,Inc.
