r
Augers were advanced to 20' ; drill cuttings consisted primarily
' of tan to brown clay and sandy clay. The cleaned sample barrel
was lowered to bottom, and was driven from 20' to 21' 6" with blow
counts of 4-9-10 . Recovery was 15" of gray to dark gray clay &
sandy clay, grading to a sticky plastic greenish-gray clay. A
' strong petroleum odor & staining was evident in the upper part of
the core. The middle tube was sealed and preserved as described
previously.
When drilling was resumed, the driller noted a change in pene-
tration nate, and it was decided to take another core at 23' due
' to the proximity to groundwater. The sampler barrel was prepared
& lowered to bottom at 23' 6" ; it was advanced to 25' with blow
counts of 10--17-22. When the core barrel was retrieved and
opened, it contained a full 18" of coarse, loose water sand. A
' distinct petroleum odor was noted, but no sheen or rainbow was
seen when a portion of the cored material was placed in a con-
tainer of water. The bottom tube was sealed and preserved using
1 the same procedures as other samples.
A tape was lowered into the hole and indicated the top of water
at 23' , which was in close agreement with MW #2.
The hole was advanced to 33' -- drill cuttings consisted of very
wet, medium to coarse-grained water sand.
rRefer to PLATE VIII for a lithologic plot of the well .
' 2" OD, flush screw joint PVC casing was run in the hole; the
bottom 15' was shop-made slots, and the rest blank. The perfor-
ations were sand-packed with 6 sacks of #2 1/2 RMC gravel, and
capped with one bucket of bentonite pellets and sufficient water
' to insure a proper seal. The top of the casing was covered to
prevent debris from entering, but the annulus was not cemented
Refer to PLATE XI for a schematic showing completion details.
The rig was then spotted on the location marked for monitoring
well #3, (MW-3, ) but due to interference of overhead power lines,
' it was necessary to relocate the well to the north east; PLATE VI
shows the location originally selected, andEj
TE VII shows the
final location.
After cutting a hole in the asphalt, new auger flights were
advanced to 5' ; cuttings consisted dark tan to brown clay, sticky
& slightly plastic. A clean sample chamber was inserted into the
' flights, and the core barrel was driven from 5' to 6' 6" with blow
counts of 3-4-7. Recovery was a full 18" , and consisted of brown
mottled clay, slightly plastic, damp but not moist. No odors
7
