clay. The driller identified it as what is called "Stockton
Blue. " Refer to SIX for a lithologic plot of the well.
After cleaning flights, they were run back to bottom, and 2' OD,
Schedule 40, flush-joint PVC was inserted in the hole to bottom.
' It was equipped with a threaded bottom cap, 15' of shop-made
slots, (top at 19' , ) and black pipe to the surface. The well was
gravel packed with 5 sacks of #2 1/2 RMC Lonestar gravel, and one
(1) bucket of bentonite pellets were placed on top of the gravel,
and covered with sufficient water to insure that the bentonite
would swell and form a tight seal. The top of the casing was
' sealed to prevent entry of debris, but it was agreed by the
County EHD representative that cementing the annulus could be
deferred until all wells were placed.
The rig was then relocated over monitoring well No. 1, (MW-1, )
and after removing asphalt, drilling began using clean flights;
the crew had brought enough clean ones to save time by having to
steam clean them between wells.
The top 1 ' was a mixture of clay, sandy clay & cobbles, which
graded to tan to brown slightly sticky sandy clay
At 5' , a clean core barrel was inserted, and was driven from 5'
to 6' 6" with blow counts of 3-8-10. Recovery was 15" of tan to
buff, slightly sticky clay with a mottled appearance. It graded
to a buff to brown, slightly sticky clay. no odors were noted.
Some pieces of black asphalt were observed in the drill cuttings.
' The bottom tube was sealed and preserved per standard procedures;
the remaining tubes and drill cuttings were placed in a metal
' drum nearby.
Augers were advanced to 10' ; drill cuttings were primarily a tan
to light brown sandy clay. A clean core barrel was inserted, and
was driven from 10' to 11' 6" with blow counts of 7-12-20. Full
recovery was obtained, and when the sampler barrel was opened, a
strong petroleum odor was noted. The core consisted of dark gray
' sticky clay, with some thin beds of dark gray sandy clay. No
free product was evident. The bottom tube was sealed & preserved
per standard procedures described earlier.
Drilling continued to 15' ; a clean sampler barrel was inserted in
the flights, and was driven from 15' to 16' 6" with blow counts of
4-5-8. When the core barrel was opened, a very strong petroleum
odor was noted. Recovery was 9" of dark gray sandy clay. A
sample was sealed and preserved as described above.
6
