PUBLIC.HEALTH SERNI19LCES
SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY r
ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH DIVISION
Karen Furst, M.D., M.P.H., Health Officer t 4%.
304 East Weber Avenue, Third Floor • Stockton, CA 95202 \ --
209/468-3420 v
' UL 281 7
KATHLEEN ANN FRANKO
2454 COUNTRY CLUB
STOCKTON CA 95204
Re: Shell Service Station Site Code: 1070
2575 Country Club Blvd
Stockton CA 95204
San Joaquin County Public Health Services, Environmental Health Division (PHS/EHD)contacted you
by correspondence dated January 12, 1995 and June 4, 1997 to inform you of the catastrophic release of
gasoline that occurred at the nearby Shell Service Station, to obtain permission for Shell Oil to sample
your well, and to provide an update, since records indicate that you still have an operable well on your
property.
Only two of five property owners with nearby wells contacted me following receipt of the June 4, 1997
correspondence. Thus far only one of the owners has signed a Shell access agreement so that a sample of
the well could be obtained. Methyl tertiary butyl ether(MTBE) which is a gasoline oxygenate has been
detected in the sample collected. There are not regulatory maximum contaminant levels established for
drinking water standards for public water systems thus far, but the State of California Department of
Health Services has established an interim action level of 35 parrs per billion (ppb). Also, taste and odor
thresholds have been reported at 15 to 45 ppb. The contamination that was detected in the drinking water
well sampled thus far has been less than either level.
PHS/EHD encourages you respond to this notification, so that your well too can be sampled by Shell at
no expense to you. I can be reached at(209)468-0337 to answer any questions you may have and to
facilitate communication with Shell Oil.
Thank you for your cooperation.
Donna Heran, Director, REHS
Environmental Health Division
Mary/Meays, Senior REHS Margard Lagono, REHS
Site Mitigation Unit Supervisor
cc: Elizabeth Thayer, Central Valley Regional Water Quality Control Board
cc: Steve Gutierrez, San Joaquin County Board of Supervisors
cc: Alex Perez, Shell Oil Company
cc: Joe Neeley, Enviros
A Division of San Joaquin County Health Care Services
