SITE BACKGROUND AND HISTORY The current business activity at the site 1s a EXxOn, retail gasoline service station and automobile repair shop. Four steel, UST's are located on the site as shown on the attached Figure 1 They include Tank # 1, a 8000-gallon, steel tank containing diesel, Wanks # 2 and # 3 , 10000-gallon steel, gasoline tanks and Tank # 4, a 550-gallon waste oil tank. Approximately 100 feet of underground product line connect the underground fuel tanks with the dispenser pumps at the two pump islands. The age of the tanks is unknown. The tanks have never been known to have leaked nor has any inventory loss been observed. SOIL BORINGS AND SAMPLING- JULY 26, 1990 Six soil borings were drilled with. a hand auger on July 26, 1990, The locations of the borings are shown as dark circles- on the attached Figure 1. These were installed by digging with a decontaminated fence pole digger to a depth of 4 feet and then using a decontaminated 4-inch diameter hand auger to collect a 4- inch thick soil sample immediately above the groundwater zone (saturated zone) . The depth of these samples varied from 7.25 feet to 8.2 feet below surface grade.. The hand auger and fence pole digger were decontaminated before each borin was accomp . This :;ished by first rinsing with tap water, washing with TSP soap and water, rinsing with isopropyl alcohol, rinsing with distilled water and .finally, air drying the sampling tools. Boring # l was located on the east side of the tank field shown in Figure I. From a depth of 0 feet to 2 feet below grade the soil encountered was a stiff, light to dark brown clay; from a depth of 2 feet to 8 feet a damp, plastic, gray to olive-brown clay was observed; groundwater was encountered at a depth of 8 feet below grade in a saturated, sandier, ,.gray, silty clay with occasional pebbles. A strong product odor was observed at a depth of 6 feet to a' total depth (TD) of 8.7 feet. Severe p product staining was also . present at a de th of 6 feet to 8.5 feet. The water level recorded 1 hour after reaching TD, was 8.4 feet below grade. A, sheen was noticed on the surface of the water but a sample was unable to be retrieved. The sample interval was 8.2 feet feet below grade. to 8.5 Boring # 2 was located 6 feet south of Boring # 1 and was also cn the east side of the tank field. The soils encountered were the _ same type__and_-.at---the--same--depths--as--in—Boring # A strong — - - gasoline odor.was observed in the soil cuttings from a depth of 6 , feet to 7.5 feet below grade. Groundwater was encountered at depth _ of 8.8 feet below grade in a saturated, sandier, gray, ailty clay with occasional pebbles. A very slight sheen was observed on the s,r' ommodt•
