i
t
Draft Environmental Impact Report Page IV.J-1
Forward Landfill Expansion
FiJ. CULTURAL RESOURCES
i
Setting
Prior to European contact, the Northern Valley Yokuts occupied the northern San
Joaquin Valley and the areas where streams flowed into the valley. The Yokuts were
141 hunters and gatherers who lived primarily in permanent villages on top of low mounds
near the banks or rivers and sloughs.
F. The Indian way of life was changed at the beginning of the nineteenth century, when
Spanish missionaries began to intensively proselytize in the San Joaquin Valley.
Mexico's independence from Spain in 1822 and the conquering of California by the U.S.
in 1846 brought increased disruption by ranchers and other American immigrants.
Previous Cultural Resources Investigations
The existing landfill project area, minus the currently proposed expansion parcel, has
been surveyed for cultural resources in the past with negative findings. In 1991 Gerike
et al surveyed the property to the north of the current study area. In 1992 Beth Padon
returned to survey the parcel directly adjacent of the current project area.
In 1992, a records search and an archaeological survey of the undisturbed portions of the
existing Forward Landfill were conducted. The records search and site survey found no
F.,
evidence of prehistoric or historic use of the existing Forward Landfill site. (County of
San Joaquin, 1993).
A records search and survey of the existing Austin Road Landfill site in 1993 did not
identify any cultural resources on that site. (City of Stockton, 1993).
F,i
2009 Cultural Resources Investigation
A request to complete an archaeological archival study was made by Holman&
F Associates on January 14th, 2009 at the Central California Information Center to obtain
information about recorded archaeological sites in and around the project area, and to
obtain copies of archaeological studies done adjacent to it(Holman& Associates,2009).
In a response dated January 21, 2009 (file no. 7299L),the Inventory checked the
Ft, following source materials:
• National Register of Historic Places
• California Register of Historic Resources
• California Inventory of Historic Resources(1976)
• California Historical Landmarks (1996)
• California Points of Historical Interest (1992 and updates)
The Directory of Properties in the Historic Property Data File
Archaeological Determinations of Eligibility (Office of Historic Preservation current
computer lists for 2008)
_,k • CALTRANS State and Local Bridge Survey (1989 and updates)
• The Survey Y of Surveys (1989)
F. • GLO Plats
No evidence of historic or prehistoric archaeological resources or historic properties
have been reported for the project area. There are no prehistoric resources reported
F,1
F
