SEPTIC TANKS and GREASE TRAP
Septic tanks affect the sludge, scum and effluent t volumes, which in turn affect treatment of
nitrogen within the tanks. Grease traps work to trap fats, oils and grease (F.O.G.). In the
following capacity calculation, a pump-out interval of one year has been used. The peaking
value used is 1.5 (typical for commercial projects). The pump-out interval will be dependant
upon what is observed in the first year of operation. For example, the grease trap may
f accumulate more F.O.G. than anticipated. Secondly, paper accumulation may be severe in the
primary tank, which would require frequent pumping. High paper accumulation is typically
observed in work environments that employ several women.
SEPTIC TANK CAPACITY:
Recommended tank capacity for a pump out interval of one year=2.0(QAVE) x Peaking Factor
(PF)=2.0(1,500 gals/day) x 1.5 =4,500 gal tank capacity required:
One - 1,200 gallon grease trap tank, dual compartment
One - 2,000 gallon primary septic tank, one compartment
One - 1,200 gallon secondary septic tank, dual compartment with dual pump vault, alarm and
effluent filters
DETENTION TIME FOR SEPTIC TANKS:
Detention Time=3-200 ca, 1 septic tank capacity 0.70 (30%volume lost to sludge/scum accumulation)
1.5 (Peaking factor) x 1,500 gals/day
Detention Time = 1.0 days. The minimum acceptable detention time is 1.0 day.
FILTER BED / LEACHLINES AND SEEPAGE PITS
Due to the environmental factors referenced above, a filter bed utilizing the Infiltrator®
Chambers as the primary disposal field will be the most economical, efficient and
environmentally beneficial design with respect to prevention of nitrification.
FILTER BED AREA:
Base Tank Capacity= 1,200 gallons (EHD recommendation):
Base Tank Capacity (BTC) +Average Daily Flow(ADF) x Soil Factor(SF) _
1,200 gal BTC + 1,500 ADF=2,700 x 0.20 SF=540 lineal feet of leachline{LFLL)
FILTER BED = 540 LFLL x 3 = 1,620 sq ft or 40 feet square%,' ' '-s
Actual Filter Bed area=40 ft x 45 ft= 1800 sq ft to 0
11
Chesney Consufting
_ p
